Jericho Sims ties NBA Draft Combine record with 44.5-inch vertical jump

How much do NBA teams rely on combine numbers relative to the NFL? It probably isn’t comparable and I doubt this does much to help his his draft stock.

Guess it depends to a degree on your projected role. KD was never gonna be banging around with bigs down low.
These guys are mostly 19-20 year olds, so they’re all going to need physical development regardless.

Spud Webb giggles at that measurement.

In all seriousness though, probably a majority of OB, if given the opportunity to jump off a standard sized chair, couldn't jump 44.5" off the ground.
And David Thompson and Darrell Griffith giggled at Spud. Spud wouldn’t like it when he would be staring at Jericho’s nads flying by him as Sims dunked on him, either…

I always thought Sims flashed better atleticism as a freshman than Mo Bamba, but Sims didn’t seem to advance much skills wise under Shaka. It seems like we have transfers with much much better college basketball offensive skills, but not the athleticism and size of some of shakas recruits. He really did so little to develop his players.

And the original ABA slam dunk contest featured George Gervin, Dr.J, and David Thompson. You can probably find it on YouTube .

Didn’t KD struggle with bench presses at the combine?

Yea, I don’t think it means Jack shit.
For someone who primarily projects as a rebounder and defender? It's a completely different dynamic than a strength measurement for a finesse basketball player. If Sims struggled with the bench press that would hurt him too.

Are you kidding? 75% of OB’s could jump 44.5” using just one leg. Jeez!

Interesting take. Sims is head and shoulders better than when he started. It took him a while to get good. He broke through with a consistent season last year. The athleticism was there. But, not the instinctual play. He needed reps to build habits.

I thought he improved with reps defensively, but has never been taught to have much game with his back to the basket.

Some of the transfers don’t seem as quick twitch but their offensive moves seem much more refined.

I hope the Mavs can trade into the second round for Sims. I think he can do everything Dwight Powell can do and he would be a better defender too. Sims has some upside as a roll guy

Went to the 1980 regional at the Summit and saw Darrell and the Cards dunk all over the place before they won it all that year. And for the youngsters that never saw Skywalker Thompson, that’s who Michael Jordan wanted to be when he grew up…

All the TX guys tested out really well. I think Sims won every contest for centers. Sims measured at 6' 10 in shoes. Kai Jones measured 6'10 without shoes and 9.25 reach. Greg Brown had the best shuttle and tested out well on everything else. Brown also had 39 inch vertical.
I would be very happy if the Spurs can get Jones at #12 and Sims in the 2nd round.

Man, he would have been a beast of an Opposite Hitter if he decided to play volleyball. At 6’10 with a 44.5 vertical and athletic, he’d be unstoppable.

Good luck to him. Seems like a good kid. I wonder though, he's always so serious. Does he joke around much with the guys?

Noticed ESPN first mock draft after the lottery had no Simms unless I overlooked his name.

I was at that contest. Unfortunately I was not into basketball at that age and not really paying attention.

I could only jump 20 inches in my mid 20s before I started playing competitive volleyball. 20 years later I was surprised when I jumped 30 inches at the super bowl event thing. A combination of better form and exercise I guess. It’s not all pure athleticism.

He put together some of the most athletic teams we’ve seen at Texas, but those same teams were some of the lowest skill level and basketball iq teams.

He did get better, but I think that was him just being physically superior to pretty much anyone he played by his senior year and having lots of game experience. He never really seemed to develop a good skillset.
