Redshirt Senior Guard, Julian Larry, reflected on his performance against Arkansas Pine-Bluff, pouring in 11 points, 3 threes, and a career high 13 assists, leading the Longhorns to a 121 - 57 victory over the Golden Lions. "My IQ kind of helped me out. When I come in and just be able to bring energy and being in my position, getting it out to other guys that just helps me get in the rhythm getting the flow quicker,” Larry said. His 13 assists, against the Golden Lions, marks the most assists by a Texas player since T.J Ford’s 14 assists against Arizona on November 21st, 2001.
Larry also mentioned what he’s learning about this year’s team during Non-Conference play, stating, “I'm learning that we're starting to come together on offense, and we're a really good running team, so I would just say like a key for us is just getting stops, and as we've continued to play, like we're continuing to see that we have really good individual on ball defenders, so really just learning from each other on that end as well, as when to help, when to not help and, that'll just help us get those clean rebounds and get out in transition.
Larry leads the team in both assists per game (4.3), and assist% (28.8), signifying just how impactful he’s been on the playmaking end that the Longhorns need. When asked what’s been the main reason for his success on the playmaking end, Larry said, “I would say that it's an attest to our pace. The pace of our offense can get people in rotations, and once I have somebody in a rotation I'm really good at getting downhill super fast, once I get downhill then I’ll draw two, and that's when you see those guys coming open, so that's when you see spray out threes, lobs or kick one more.”
Larry’s 13 assists against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, displays the attribute he brings to this team, being the Floor General that the longhorns need. And anytime you’re mentioned with the likes of a Longhorn legend like T.J. Ford it’s definitely something special. “It's definitely great. I've seen TJ a few times, talked to him a few times, and watched a little bit of his game, So it's definitely great being mentioned with his name, with these assists, and being a point guard.”
With the SEC showing little to no signs of weakness, and becoming one of, if not, the toughest conference in all of College Basketball, the Longhorns will have their work cut out for them when they’re welcomed to their SEC opener in College Station (Jan 4th.) when the Longhorns take on the Texas A&M Aggies at 7:00PM CT. When asked what’s the sense surrounding SEC play, Larry responded “I mean it's definitely fun. That's what you come to Texas for, to play the best, so it's not really dawning looking at it, it's more like you can't wait to get out there and play against those type of teams, because, those high level basketball games is what we're here playing for.”
Quick notes about the matchup on Thursday (Dec. 19th, 7:00PM CT) against the New Orleans Privateers , we will be seeing two Head coaches go toe to toe who graduated from The University of St. Edwards here in Austin. Another thing Longhorn fans will be please seeing a return of is Javon Felix, who is now a current assistant coach for the Privateers, so it will be a sight to see when a former Alumni travels back to help take on the Longhorns.
