Got to spend a little time with ex-Texas OC Shawn Watson today (again). He was at the Senior Bowl when I was first able to talk with him and just saw him this morning milling around the media room at the Combine. I went to ask him what the heck he was doing hanging out around all these media scumbags and had a nice conversation with him.

He still hasn't found a job but is clearly doing the networking rounds and I'm sure he'll get hired soon enough since he's putting himself out there in the right places like the Senior Bowl and Combine. I think he's interested in moving on to the NFL, says a lot of the guys he came up with in coaching have moved to the league and he's always thought about it, but never made the jump but thinks he's at the point now where he is ready.

He says an NFL job might be just right for him at this point because his friends all say that it could be better for a type like him that is a football junkie but not necessarily a recruiting junkie. As a big-time X and O's guy, it seems like he's really just interested in drawing up plays and stuff than recruiting.

He says that his time at Texas was unbelievably frustrating and that there were things that happened behind the scenes that no one knew that painted him in a bad light. He said that neither Swoopes or Heard were ready to play and you can't win games until you're not having to develop a QB on the job. I asked who he thought the starter would be next season if he had to put his money on it, and he said, it will depend on how those two (Heard and Swoopes) continue to develop because neither were ready even last year. He said that whatever happens with the coaching staff, that Texas will be out of QB purgatory soon with Shane Buechele and Sam Ehlinger in the pipeline. He believes that between those two, at least one and possibly both will get their "shots" in situations much more conducive to success than Swoopes or Heard were initially placed in.
