Katy Cinco Ranch linebacker David Gbenda has maintained all along that he wants to take his time with the recruiting process. Gbenda has actually held out longer than a lot of people thought he would and while he is still sorting through the recruiting process, he now says he doesn’t have a firm timetable for when he’ll have a decision. It could happen in the coming weeks, Gbenda said, or it could go well into the fall.
“I’m just coming down to a date basically. All I’m doing right now, trying to find a date for when I feel most comfortable and see what I want to do,” Gbenda said.
The 6-0, 215-pound Gbenda and his Cinco Ranch teammates started preseason practices this week. With college programs well into their preseason camps, Gbenda said he may take a bit of time to see how the college football season plays out.
"It’s just really how I’m feeling with it, based off my feelings of it,” Gbenda said when asked how he’d come to a commitment date. “Really it’s where the season is going, how the year is coming along.”
With more than 20 scholarship offers, Gbenda is a player everyone will be watching this fall. He said he’s ready for the spotlight and determined to show everyone what he’s capable of.
“I just really want to show that I am good, that I’m here to stay with this, that I’m going to be make a big impact in college,” Gbenda said. “That’s what I’m ready to prove to everyone.
“I feel I’ve improved on my leadership skills. I also feel I’ve improved on my lifting (strength) and my pass coverage. Also my understanding of the fundamentals of things, the little things.”
Gbenda said he’ll sit down with his family soon to talk about the recruiting process and possibly set up some visits for the fall. At this point, he has no trips set up but plans to fit some in around his team’s schedule.
The Longhorns are one of the programs who have been high on Gbenda’s list for several months. Nothing has changed there, Gbenda said, as Texas should receive strong consideration when he does come to a decision.
“With Texas, it’s the same as usual with them,” Gbenda said. “Really, it’s just going to be the same thing with them. But mostly I’ve been focused on the school season.”
