As always, we'll give analysis along with the tiered rankings (now updated through the Baylor game) which are derived via a proprietary scoring formula, and based on the following advanced charting statistics (please note the distinctions in how tackles, etc. are counted and why these stats will always differ from the official university stats):

***Please note since 2019: -1 point has been added for any defensive penalty outside of defensive pass interference which is always considered a coverage burn and is not double-counted.***

Quick Hits

- Slow start for the interior DL

We were worried about the interior defensive line to start the game as we didn't record a single stat or instance of production/dispruption for the first four series of the game versus a Baylor OL that was not good. That changed in the fifth series when the big dog Keondre Coburn submarined the line's interior on a would-be third down QB sneak to bust up the play and earn himself a TFL combined with a rare *additional* run-stuff. The good news for the Texas defensive line is that the edge guys were actually pretty active to start the game. Ossai was his usual hellion-self before going down with a shoulder injury, Moro Ojomo finally seemed to turn it on with some nice plays, getting pressures and a sack when converting outside-in on his pass-rush moves while Jacoby Jones had two nice QB hits early.

- Reese Leitao watering down the SDE rotation

As Moro Ojomo heats up and finally looks to be coming out of the basement of the Deep Dig rankings, Jacoby Jones continues to still look like the better option despite clearly being viewed as the backup. Regardless, both are better options than Reese Leitao, who is, at this point, just watering down the rotation with a player who seems to be emerging in Ojomo and one who needs to be on the field more in Jones.

- Big-time issues at JACK post-Joseph Ossai

First off, we got the full Jett Bush Experience versus Baylor as he played most of the second half at the JACK once Ossai left the game late in the first half. Bush is a decent-enough player for a former walk-on, but how many former walk-ons are playing the most important edge-rush roles for the Alabamas and the Clemsons of the world? 1) What does it say about Byron Vaughns (now in the transfer portal), and young guys like Prince Dorbah etc. that none of these guys are doing the things in practice that get the coaches on board to put them on the field in these types of spots? Joseph Ossai could very well go pro after this season and we're not totally sure what happens next when and if he does. 2) Why did Ossai go back in the game for the final series on defense? If he was hurt enough to still remain questionable for the upcoming game, it's hard to understand why the staff wouldn't have just left Bush out there for the final series of the second half after he'd already handled the previous four?

- Cornerback coverage so far (2020 season)

Texas' outside cornerback group is the defense's biggest weakness. We saw in the Baylor game that Texas tightened its CB rotations to its largest degree of the 2020 season to include the one pairing of two players (D'Shawn Jamison and Josh Thompson) we've seen all season. We know it is the philosophy of programs under Herman to not let any player be a true starter without proving it to the coaching staff that he is capable, although we don't truly know exactly where the proving ground is: on the practice field or on the game field. Members of the Texas media are allowed to attend less practice than media members covering most other college programs (a practice that Tom Herman should remedy next season in an effort to possibly endear himself a little more to this contingent while his seat continues to smolder) but if we're looking at games only, here's how Texas' top three corner match up against one another in a few of our metrics:

Total snaps:

Jamison - 248
Thompson - 227
Green - 219

Total Market Share of Team Productivity

Jamison - 3.7%
Thompson - 3%
Green - 1.3%

Snaps per production caused

Jamison - 17.67
Thompson - 19.65
Green - 43.49

Completion percentage allowed when clearly targeted (broadcast angle only)

Jamison - 57.89% (clearly targeted 19 times)
Thompson - 66.67% (clearly targeted 18 times)
Green - 73.33% (clearly targeted 15 times)

Snaps per coverage burn

Jamison - 248
Thompson - 75.7
Green - 54.8

Snaps per missed tackle

Jamison - 124
Green - 109.5
Thompson - 56.8

Snaps per big coverage win (INT, blowup, PBU)

Jamison - 82.7

Thompson - 113.5

Onward to the offense, off to the basement.
