It’s hard watching the player updates about re-recruiting stud players to come back to campus for a sophomore or junior year. I get that the sport has changed and if I were a player I would be wanting to optimize my financial benefits as well—don’t hold it against them at all. But it reminds the fans of the program, that it’s less about the love of playing at Texas than it used to be. Sure there have always been shady deals to get players pre-NIL. But before the portal, once that player was at a school, there was no threat of him switching teams. College football always had that tribal advantage over the NFL—the players chose their university. It’s clearly becoming more of a hired hand approach. Winning will still be fun no doubt, but it feels as if it’s losing his luster. I hope the state of college football gets “fixed,” but I’m not even sure what that means.
One of my favorite recent Twitter posts was “it’s all fun and games until a Saudi prince falls in love with Temple football.”
