The Little League Southwest Regional starts tomorrow in Waco. For the past umpteen years the first few rounds been shown live on The Longhorn Network with the finish on ESPN. And for nearly all those years, Keith Moreland has done the play-by-play. Well, Keith will still be the voice of the tournament, but as we all know, the Longhorn Network is history. So most of the tournament games this year will be on ESPN Plus, which is a streaming pay site. All games Thursday through Saturday will be streamed, and then starting Sunday, 3 of the last 4 will be on regular ESPN.
Richmond Lamar (Texas East) and Boerne (Texas West) will both open play tomorrow. I've seen both play, and both are really good.
This is Boerne's first time to make it this far. This team has scored double digit runs in all 10 games they've played, and their smallest win margin has been 11 runs. They've outscored their opponents 146 to 10. And, they've got the easiest draw in Waco. They open with Arkansas tomorrow morning and the winner plays New Mexico (which got a first round bye) Friday morning. Arkansas teams have won only 3 games over the past 7 years in Waco, so I'll be a bit surprised if this first game is close.
Richmond is in Waco for the 4th time, and in their three previous trips their record is a remarkable 14 and 1. The only loss was an extra inning loss in the 2008 championship game. In 2003 they finished 3rd in the US and in 2004 were the national runner-up. They have a record this year of 13-1 with the only loss being 3 to 2 against perennial power Pearland. But they came back to beat Pearland twice on the last day of the Texas East tournament to advance. The 3 runs allowed in their one loss, is the most they have allowed in a game all season. They open play at 4 tomorrow against Mississippi which doesn't usually have a real strong team.
