ROUNDUP OF SPORTS THIS WEEKEND:
The rowing team has a very big challenge this weekend … and yes, Texas is a rowing school.
The Longhorns are hosting the Longhorn Invite at Lake Walter E. Long.
The lineup for the event is absolutely stacked. Not only is Stanford, one of the real contenders for the national championship coming to town, but head coach David O’Neill thought he would kick things up a notch by bringing in the Canadian national team to race as well. Yes, the same Canadian national team that picked up silver in the Olympics last summer.
“Number one (Texas) vs. number two (Stanford), all eyes will be on Austin, Texas this weekend,” O’Neill said. “And as an added bonus, having the Canadian national team, the Canadian senior team,” O’Neill said. “They’re going to have a mini training camp here in Austin and then they’ll join Texas and Stanford for the first eight race on Saturday morning so that should be fantastic.”
The Horns got two heat wins out of the way Friday before bad weather forced the rest of the events to get pushed to Saturday.
Saturday should be a really exciting day and it is worth getting out to check out the events.
############################
The beach volleyball team is competing in the conference championship and they are just one win away from locking up the title.
Texas had zero trouble beating South Carolina three – nil.
It was another sweep over Florida State in the semifinals.
Now, they have one more match to win it all on Saturday afternoon.
Things really kick into high gear next week when Texas competes in the NCAA championships.
############################
The Texas softball team has a huge series against OU in Norman. This team has been battling lately. The Horns lost a series against Tennessee and then needed two comeback victories to win the series against LSU last weekend.
Things didn’t get off to a great start in Norman with Texas dropping game one.
############################
Texas Track and Field hosted the Texas Invitational at the Mike Myers and showed out very well.
Both Texas 4x100-meter relays took first, with the women going 43.53. The men won with a time of 39.47.
Sophomore Nabil Tezkratt is now tenth on Texas’ all-time 400-meter performance list with his time of 45.67 … which was good enough for second at the meet.
