Longhorns Baseball: Texas Longhorns vs San Jacinto Gators Postgame Recap & Thoughts

Great stuff, Mike, but you made one major mistake. You said that the 2021 baseball season has officially kicked off.

However, the 2021 season ended in Omaha, Nebraska 4 months ago.

What just ended was Fall Ball 2021. It was a prelude to the next regular season which begins next year in February.
True, my football bias is showing with that one. Apologies on that!

We’re our pitchers effectively working the zone, or did we have quite a bit to dust off from the off season?

Defensively we’re they sharp?

Was the offense aggressive on the bags?
Pitching control needs work, but overall I don't think it's a big concern. Lots of short outings so nothing that should be analyzed too heavily. From looking at last season, we should still have one of the better pitching staffs in the country

Defense looked very good, lots of impressive plays. Maybe a few bloopers that I'd like to see converted into outs, but infield seemed lights out to me.

Not a lot of steals from my recollection, but there was plenty of aggression when it came to extending bases on hits

Thanks for the write up. Excited to see Duplantier back in spikes. Love me some Mitchell D, too. LeBarron looks like he's got the frame and starter kit for some action in the show one day. Southard as the closer? Interesting. We shall see about that.
Unsure if they just wanted him out there or if the last inning was meaningful, but he looked pretty good. Bullpen has some heat

I watched 9 of the 14 innings. The pitchers looked solid - 3 earned runs, 9 hits, 8 K's, 1 HBP, no walks, 1 wild pitch.

No errors. One blooper in right field got past Campbell, but they scored it a double. Could have been a single and error. One nice scoop by Melendez. One nice play in the hole by Faltine and a nice stab by Messinger. Some nice running catches in the outfield. One double play. Gave up a steal of 3rd.

Melendez got thrown out by 10 feet trying to come home on a single from 2nd but that was the only mistake. Had one double steal that scored a run.
hey, it wouldn't be a Texas baseball game without a guy getting thrown out at home plate by 10 feet :)

@MichaelRochman solid effort to report the results. I'm one of the guys w. 108 stitches on his heart here.
I don't envy you:)
You obviously huge shoes to fill given Dustins very real and comprehensive knowledge of details of the game and the nuances /mechanics of pitching fielding and hitting.

He detailed the results of the game too, but more importantly detailed what drove the results .It was always insightful to read what pitches were working, how the pitchers mechanics looked, how at bats were approached mechanically and then breaking down how the leather was thrown.

Only a real baseball guy or real student of the game can do that. Baseball is the bluest blood of our top 3 sports and deserves the best baseball coverage/Analysis that can be had imo.

Hopefully you will be that guy!Good luck man!!

EDIT::Just read your twitter profile..you are a fantasy -nfl draft guy? Whats your baseball background??Were you a player , fan, student of the game etc? What pro and college teams did you follow prior to joining OB?Beyyer not ne aggy like Kendall---lol

Again Welcome and good luck!:_)

Thanks for the welcome, I am certainly someone with a majority of my experience and passion in football, but I love baseball as well. I played it when I was younger but never made much of it past my youth, I grew up a huge Pedro Martinez and Cubs fan, and still am to this day.

As far as experience goes, I have spent time both covering baseball for some gambling sites, and spent a few years as an umpire back in my hometown during the summers!

I certainly love baseball, but I know that I will need to continue to develop and grow my knowledge/analysis in order to come close to the past coverage that has been provided here at orangebloods, I am hoping that you guys are able to help me just as much as I hope to help provide coverage and we can get the best product put forward! Always open to feedback, suggestions, or any thoughts at all so just let me know!

There are some very very knowledgeable baseball guys on here as well as several former players. I'm sure all will pitch in as well as welcome you. :)

Good write-up.

Who all got time behind the plate? What about the transfer from Vandy?
Kimble Schuessler (Llano HS), transfer from A&M, replaced Ardoin at catcher in the 10th inning and went 2 for 2 with a triple, single and 2 RBI's.

Preston Hoffart (Magnolia HS and Blinn JC) replaced Schuesser in the 13th inning and went 0 for 1 with a fly out.

Jack O'Dowd, transfer from Vanderbilt, replaced Daly at 2B in the 10th inning and went 1 for 2 with a single, walk and RBI.
