Wide receiver Quentin Johnston is one of the top prospects in the country. A Rivals100 member, Johnston checks in at No. 61 in the national rankings. Despite the lofty rankings, Johnston is one of the least-discussed prospects in the Lone Star State, mostly because he rarely does interviews so he stays out of the spotlight.

Recently, Johnston took an unofficial visit to the Texas Longhorns for UT’s Heat Wave pool party, and OB was able to catch up with the elusive playmaker to get an update on where things stand with his recruitment.

For Johnston, the UT visit – along with any others he has taken or will take – is all about him getting comfortable with schools so he can narrow his focus.

“First of all, my thing for coming is I haven’t gotten a sense for narrowing schools,” Johnston said.” These summer visits, the main thing is me narrowing them down.”

When it does come time to trim his list or even make a commitment, Johnston said he’ll be looking for a combination of factors, including academic reputation and a place in which he feels at home.

“I’m looking for a family feel. Most of the big D1 programs they’re going to have good programs … I want that family feel,” he said. “I’m trying to major in Business, so a good academic school in business.”

A 6-4, 190-pounder out of Temple (TX), Johnston said the Texas staff stresses its academic reputation – UT’s McCombs School of Business is one of the country’s best – almost as much as it talks about the Longhorn football program.

As for last weekend’s unofficial visit, Johnston said it was a good time overall, including the time spent with the other recruits and coaches.

“When I first walked in here, it was laid back. Then when we got to the pool, it was like a whole different energy. It just turned up a level,” Johnston said. “All the coaches were hyped. All the players and recruits were hyped. I had fun meeting new people. It’s just like electrifying. You almost get chills being here.”

Texas is in need of a tall, athletic outside receiver like Johnston, someone who could potentially come in and help fill the void that will be left when Collin Johnson graduates following the 2019 season. The opportunity to see the field early is something Johnston has discussed with the UT staff.

“Looking at the depth chart, they’ve told me I’m one of the top recruits coming in and what I could do to fit in,” Johnston said. “They’d give me an opportunity to come in and take someone’s position.”

Johnston is the nation’s No. 13-ranked wide receiver and the No. 5-ranked player in the state of Texas overall.
