*** Every Monday during the offseason, we'll have this thread, updating the projected depth chart for the upcoming period or during the period in progress. It will alternate from offense to defense weekly, meaning that each side of the ball will be "updated" every two weeks. Since there are sure to be times when updates are not needed due to nothing having changed or no new info coming in, please think of this thread more as a place for depth chart discussion to live. In weeks where there are no updates, we can discuss changes we'd like to see, ideas we ponder when looking at the personnel and any other thoughts you may have. Of course, in some weeks there will be major changes based on events, circumstances, news and intel coming from out of the program. ***
And today, we move to fall projections since projecting spring football feels about as useful as tits on a bull at this point. This is an obvious first draft, so go easy ...
What do you do with incoming freshman ATH Dajon Harrison? It leads to bigger and more pertinent questions. The reason it comes up is because it seems like he's best suited to play slot WR -- a position that is already very deep. We have Jake Smith, we have Jordan Whittington who'll be used as an offensive weapon but probably falls into the catch-all category of slot WR, we have Joshua Moore who played there exclusively in 2019 before his legal issues and fellow freshman Kelvontay Dixon who does not profile to play outside.
I see a few ways this can go:
1) WRs coach Andre Coleman told me at his availability earlier in the spring that he thinks Jake Smith can play outside and the starting lineup of Eagles, Smith and Whittington just sounds most appealing; however, we've gotten word that some others on the offensive staff that Coleman saying he "could" doesn't mean he "should."
2) Maybe Dajon Harrison can play corner? His high school highlights certainly showcase some nice ability on that side of the ball -- however, from what Jason knows at this point, Harrison is of the clear mindset that he is coming in as a receiver. If that is the case, he's going to play slot almost assuredly.
3) Maybe we can move Joshua Moore outside? He's not that big, but is a field-stretcher-type.
The fact is that something in this projection needs to give. Texas cannot have a five-man stockpile (including two of your three best WRs on the team) playing in the slot while the outside X and Z positions are only stocked 2-3 deep.
If Texas actually showed it was capable and willing to run true 4WR sets when it is not forced to via injury, it wouldn't be any issue at all, but under Herman, they simply don't -- especially not when a TE like Andrew Beck or Cade Brewer has been healthy. We can talk all we want about a hypothetical world where Whittington and Smith are on the field at the same time in the slot all day but Herman will not be changing his stripes regarding his use of the TE position while Cade Brewer and/or another TE he trusts is healthy ... he just won't. At least, I will only believe it when I actually see it.
TEXAS TRUE 4WR SETS DURING 2019:
La Tech: 0 of 89 snaps
LSU: 12 of 88 snaps (in desperation-mode; final two series' on offense)
Rice: 0 of 89 snaps
OSU: 0 of 71 snaps
WVU: 0 of 80 snaps
OU: 0 of 81 snaps
KU: 0 of 85 snaps
TCU: 0 of 85 snaps
***CADE BREWER INJURED***
KSU: 27 of 65 snaps
ISU: 47 of 67 snaps
Baylor: 41 of 68 snaps
Texas Tech: 8 of 75 snaps
***CADE BREWER RETURNS***
Utah (Bowl): 3 of 60 snaps
Do I really have to crunch the numbers to point out the trend here?
This is sure to change MANY TIMES prior to the start of fall camp, but we have to start somewhere so here goes nothing:
