Rivals dropped its updated top 10 players in the class of 2024 today, with a familiar name at the top: Tre Johnson of Lake Highlands High School in Dallas. Johnson took an OV to Austin this past weekend along with 2023 five-star SG Wesley Yates.

The 6'5 off guard is an incredible talent who is one of the best shooters in his class, while also containing NBA upside. According to Rob Cassidy, "The Texas-based shooting guard's offensive versatility is unmatched in this class, as he's a true three-level scorer with a smooth stroke from the three-point line and the ability to create off the bounce."

Johnson burst onto the scene as a sophomore when he put up 37 points against seniors Cason Wallace and Rylan Griffen in LH's game against Richardson. Though Lake Highlands lost the game, 84-78, Tre Johnson announced his presence as one of the top players in the state at just 16. This trajectory only continued as he had a spectacular junior season as well. Gearing up for his senior season, Tre will be scouted and recruited by every big program. Right now, it's Texas, Baylor, and Kentucky as the frontrunners in his recruitment.

OTHER TOP 10 PLAYERS WITH WHOM TEXAS IS INVOLVED

4. Naasir Cunningham

Cunningham is a wing out of Atlanta, GA who will be playing for pro league Overtime Elite before going to college/going pro (yes, this is allowed now). He's a long, skilled slasher with shooting touch and good defensive instincts that has the talent necessary to be the number one player as well, a spot he has held before.

The one complaint with Cunningham according to Rob Cassidy is his consistency – but if he can play at an even level throughout the season, watch out. Cunningham could be a top-five pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

The schools involved are Texas, Duke, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Auburn.

6. Asa Newell

Newell, who plays for Montverde in Florida, alma mater of Texas basketball player Dillon Mitchell, picked up a Texas offer recently.

From Rob Cassidy: "Newell already carried a lofty ranking before this update, but his trajectory remains positive. His combination of length, fluidity and shooting touch have helped propel him into the top 10 this time."

Though he has a Texas offer, the favorites right now seem to be more local schools: Florida, Florida State, Georgia. Illinois is also making a push.

Of all of these players, Texas has its best shot with Tre Johnson, which would make sense, given his proximity to Austin. I'm seeking an interview with him soon, so stay tuned for that.
