Methodist schism

I am not Methodist, but this is a big deal. I am curious what the resident Methodists think of the split.

My personal opinion is that it is unfortunate what has happened to the mainline Protestant churches in the US over the last fifty years. I am Catholic, but recognize the importance of these mainline denominations in the development of our nation and our American culture. The fact that it is being split over a concept that has no basis in Christian theology, and up until a few years only belonged to a fringe minority, is tragic. The likely result is that in another fifty years these former mainline, now liberal, denominations will be fringe churches themselves.
