I just exchanged some texts with wide receiver Mookie Cooper, who tells me he has decommitted from Texas.
"I have decommitted on the fact that I wasn't 100 percent sure on the decision and timing," Cooper said. "I just wasn't ready, and it being so early."
Cooper tells me he has been in touch with the Texas staff this week, as one would expect, and the Longhorn coaches have continued to recruit him and tell him Texas is "the place for me."
This one took an odd turn mid-week after Cooper visited Illinois last weekend. Following that trip, Cooper told OB that he was just enjoying the process and there wasn't much to it, and we were told there was still confidence on the Texas side. A couple days later, he's officially re-opened his recruitment just a few weeks after he originally committed to Texas.
Illinois is obviously a program to watch moving forward, especially with Cooper having a teammate there (Shammond Cooper) and former St. Louis Trinity Catholic head coach Cory Patterson on staff there, although Cooper said it wasn't necessarily last weekend's visit that caused him to open things up.
"Illinois is Illinois. I've been there a thousand times, it's nothing new," Cooper said.
Cooper tells me he's basically back to square one and keeping things open. I'd expect Texas to stay on him, but it's not often you see a kid decommit and then recommit to the same school. We'll see.
