I don't give a damn about Ash.... seriously if Herman let's Naivar get away it will be as bad as a decision as keeping Orlando and Beck on after the OU game.

The man is not a genius, but Naivar did what me and others on this board BEGGED Orlando to do...put a 4th guy down, bringing pressure with the line instead of bringing a DB 15 yards out of the secondary resulting in nothing but busted coverage. It also shut down the edges, not allowing QBs and RBs run to run wild like they did all season.

Naivar correctly got our best defensive player into position to wreck havoc in the offensive back field. Assai was a man among boys last night, standing him up on the end and turning him loose was a beautiful site. His pressure allowed our secondary to actually look good...they didn't have to cover for 10 seconds like most of this year

We gave up around 260 total yards to Utah...and ONLY 126 yards passing....read that again. Results matter and Naivar apparently made the decision to do that. Roach is quoted saying that Naivar installed a brand new defense in less than 4 weeks.

Now just imagine if Tom Herman would have listened to me, yes some random orange blood Yahoo, but fire Orlando after OU? Then what we saw last night could have been what we SHOULD have seen all year.

Nonetheless, we finally got what we should have had and say WE KEEP NAIVAR.

As for the offense, I don't know who called the plays but whoever it was never abandoned the run all night and it was encouraging. We put up 250 plus rushing on the #1 rated run defense in the country....a defense littered with NFL talent...I am more encouraged about next year now then post Georgia Sugar Bowl.

Just like the old saying goes hindsight is always 20/20.

My question is how can Orlando go from being "the second coming" to fired in one year? Now you want to lock this guy up after one game? You played very well last night, but it is still just one game. What say you?

To be fair I think Orlando or any DC would have run a bigger front against Utah. They are an old school huddle, running and TE offense.

give the OP a break. He says hire the guy that did what he said needed to be done. Well, hell just cut out the middle man and hire the OP and send Ash packing!...I mean, why fu*k around?

One of the best posts I have seen all year.I thought Naivar did a great job and Texas defense should have played like that all year.

If anything, I think it could help Naivar keep his job as Safeties or a DB coach. Not sure how that would work though since Ash is a safeties guy himself.

It would be shocking, and disappointing, for a new DC like Ash to not be able to come in at replicate the usage Naviar did last night. The OP is right that there were some seemingly easy fixes for the defense all year that Orlando seemed to be overcomplicating. If Ash can't continue the easy fixes like Naviar, we are in big trouble.

So you want to cancel the contract of the new DC to hire a guy already on staff who prepared a game plan that Utah had no film of? No thanks

This. It can’t be overstated that Utah had zero film of 2019 Texas in a 4-3 look.

Having said that, the D did play their asses off and Coach Naivar deserves a sh!t ton of credit. Beautifully prepared and executed.

You realize that Ash has been an analyst for Texas all season? You are making an assumption that Navair devised this system and made all of these calls by himself.

If you're drinking, don't start threads on OB or really anywhere. That's what I say.

This sort of thinking--if it evolves into pressure--results in paying huge, foolish sums for buyouts.

That said, good on NYE-var. Alamo Bowl sure looked good.

A bowl performance is definitely not indicative of things to come (reference 2019 Sugar Bowl and following regular season). I’m happy with the result of the game, but I think it hardly justifies the action you’re calling for. With that being said, I hope Naiver is retained and has a big input on Ash’s scheme and personnel fits.

I had to rewatch to be certain but our base defense didn't change from a 3 down to a 4 down, we based out of a 3-3-5. Perhaps the major change was that Ossai (Or Roach) were more consistently on the LOS as a stand-up OLB on the edge while the other DE was in more of a 5 technique instead of the 4i. The nickelback was opposite the OLB in the alley. It was a very effective look and does seem to use our players talents the best. I look forward to more of that next year.

We also mixed up the fronts quite a bit, multiple times with 1 DL and even more with just 2 DL and 2 OLB at the LOS. A handful of times we had 4 down linemen.

Malcolm Roach was quoted after the game that Naivar came up with the defensive scheme implemented for the Bowl game....if it was Ash then I guess our players were unaware. It would be interesting to know if Ash did indeed have any input though.
