I will be taking the family there next week. I will definitely hit up the usual things like Ryman, Grand Ole Opry, and I am renting a car and driving to the Jack Daniels Distillery and also to drive to the Smokies at Gatlinburg and do the zipline thing. I was wondering if anybody had any "must do" recommendations. Will be staying at the Opryland Hotel.

Oprey land hotel is fantastic. Back in my college days I did a vendor booth at a convention for all the Office Depot managers in the country. Our team was one of the bigger ones and we did a huge booth. It was a blast. One of the best hotels I've ever stayed at.

After the convention we went to this restaurant to celebrate. I can't for the life of me remember the name of it, (this was about 25 years ago). The food was amazing but we got this appetizer platter with lots of different things including deep fried Rocky Mountain Oysters. We put together a pool of about 75 bucks to see who would eat one. I did my best, but I did the one thing I shouldn't have. I opened up the dam thing to look under the crust. I picked it up and the slimy little bastard popped out like a wet eyeball. After that I was out.

We stayed downtown a couple of weeks ago. First time to Nashville. I couldn't believe the number of bars with live music, all on a Friday afternoon, and located on the river. Thousands of people. It looked like 6th street on steroids. Literally dozens of bars, all with live music, and all packed. I have now learned that Nashville is the Bachelorette Party capital of the US. Not sure this is what you are looking for on a family trip, but I was amazed. Titans stadium is right across the river - next time Cowboys play there, I am in - Two thumbs up!

Bring your steel toed boots because the fatties will step on your toes at some point. I couldn't believe the number of, not just fat people---- but morbidly obese people. I went into a bar expecting it to be filled with hotties in their 20s and 30s and instead it looked like a weight watchers convention. If they'd have placed a cattle guard at the front door, there'd have only been about a dozen people in there.

You sure you're not confusing Nashville with San Antonio. I see that all the time here in San Antonio. It's at the point now that I'm surprised when i see a non-fatty here.

Oh it's bad in SA as well but for a different cultural reason. The Latino women in SA get married and start having kids and grow fat on beans and tortillas and it's accepted because they are the matriarch of the family. In Nashville it's just a bunch of trailer trash rednecks that eat fried pies and fried Oreos all the live long day.

I didn't know about the bars on the river. I will definitely take the wife there at least one of the nights. My youngest two are 19 and 14, so they will do okay at the hotel. There is a lot to do just at the hotel from what I have seen on the website including an indoor waterpark.

Oh there's plenty of single women in Nashville that enjoy water sports.

Just an FYI for anybody interested. We drove 3+ hours from Nashville to Gatlinburg in eastern Tennessee. I wanted to see the Smoky Mountains. It was worth the trip and we spent 2 days there. The area is absolutely gorgeous. My two eyes have never seen so much beauty. Gatlingburg and Pigeon Forge are 15-20 minutes apart and I did not know how much there is to do there. Gatlinburg is a real cool small town with all of the major hotels. We caught the Hatfield and McCoy show, but there were many other shows in the area. The zipline was fun along with the Ripley's museums. I missed out on the whitewater rafting because of time. I didn't go to Dollywood. When we got back to Nashville, we did a couple of museums and the wife and I drove to Lynchburg (1 1/2 hrs) to tour the Jack Daniel's Distillery. That was a blast. I now want to go back to the area, but north to Kentucky and do the Bourbon Trail. If you have kids young or old, I very much recommend Gatlingburg/Pigeon Forge because it is more interactive type vacation. My 19 and 14 year olds said this has been there favorite vacation.

Sounds like you’re describing the clientele of the Dollar General I hang out in on Saturday nights. Easy pickins’ Just how I like it

So, no Ernest Tubb Record Shop, Tootsie’s, CM Hall if Fame, Grand Ole Opry? Blasphemy

Grand Ole Opry-yes. Watched Clint Black. I also went to George Jones Museum, Madam Tussauds and Belle Meade Plantation. Just ran out of time since some of it was business. I missed out on Tootsie's and Hattie B's Hot Chicken and the other great museums. I am still bummed out about not eating at Hattie B's.
