THE MATCHUPS—Texas heads on the road for the NCAA Greenville Super Regional to face No. 8 national seed East Carolina at Clark-LeClair Stadium. The Longhorns will play just their third road Super Regional and the first since the 2005 season. The 2005 Texas team defeated Ole Miss in three games before going on to win the program’s sixth national championship. The Longhorns swept Florida State in the 2003 Tallahassee Super Regional in their only other road super. East Carolina is making its third-consecutive Super Regional and seventh overall. Friday’s game will be the first meeting between Texas and East Carolina.

A LOOK AT THE LONGHORNS—Texas swept its way to the NCAA Austin Regional Championship with wins over Air Force and Louisiana Tech, while outscoring the teams 26-6. Skyler Messinger earned Regional Tournament MVP honors in his first career postseason games. Messinger batted .778 with a double, four RBI and five runs scored. In the regional, Texas fielded 1.000 and compiled a staff ERA of 2.00. The Longhorns head into the Greenville Super Regional having won 14 of the last 17 games. Texas leads the Big 12 with a .317 team batting average and a program record 118 homers, while the pitching staff is first in the league with a 4.05 ERA. The Longhorns are also the nation’s top fielding team with a .987 fielding percentage.

TWO. That is the number of games that Texas must win to make their return back to Omaha. The 2022 season comes down to two games against the East Carolina Pirates, a team looking to make their first trip to the College World Series. A trip to Omaha is something that has eluded East Carolina in their last 31 attempts and it would be ironic that this year is the one considering this is one of the least talented East Carolina squads that they have fielded in recent years. The Pirates do have two things going for them though. They have never hosted a Super Regional at home and they have been on absolute fire since the last week in April. The Texas Longhorns stand in their way though sporting one of the nations best offenses and a pair of starting pitchers that give the Horns a chance to win each time they take the mound. Hostile environment be damned, WIN two games and the Horns return to their summer vacation home, Omaha!
