The Texas Longhorns extended an offer to safety Jerrin Thompson last week, and it didn’t take long for Thompson to set up a trip to Austin. The Lufkin product and Rivals250 member will be on the Texas campus on Monday for an unofficial visit, and he said he’s anxious to get a renewed look at what UT has to offer now that he has a scholarship in hand.

“I want to see pretty much what I’ve seen the last time I visited my sophomore year. I really liked everything about it, the atmosphere,” Thompson said. “It was a cool vibe.”

Texas offered Thompson on Tuesday of last week. The 6-0, 175-pound Thompson knew he was squarely on UT’s radar and while he wasn’t necessarily expecting an offer to come his way, he said he was happy to get the good news.

“Coach (Craig) Naivar always told me they don’t give out uncommittable offers. When he hit me up, I kind of thought I was going to get the offer,” Thompson said. “I was excited because it was Texas. Texas is just Texas. I was just grateful to get that offer.”

With the Longhorns having a chance to impress on Monday’s visit, Thompson isn’t completely ruling out the possibility of a quick decision if things just feel right.

"They would have to impress me,” Thompson said. “I would have to like it that much, let my heart take over. Whatever happens, happens."

Ranked No. 201 on the Rivals250, Thompson is a versatile defender in the back end who says he’s open to playing anywhere in the secondary. He plans to talk to the UT coaches on Monday about their plans for him, and hopes to gauge whether or not he’d have a chance to play early. Texas seems to be trending in the right direction in this one, and Thompson admits there’s a lot to like about the Longhorn program.

“Their program is good, the degree is good. It’s just Texas,” Thompson said. “I’m from Texas. As a kid, Texas and Texas A&M were the two schools every kid dreamed of going to. That’s just how it is.”
