Tonight, the Longhorns finish up their non-conference slate in 2022 with a matchup against Texas A&M-Commerce. Commerce's head coach, Jaret Von Rosenberg, leads the Lions in their first season as a Division-I program, which has been highly successful so far given the difficulties of moving up from Division-II.

So far this season, TAMU-C has wins over Hawaii and Air Force, both of which were teams that were expected to roll the Lions. Despite losing five straight coming into this game, the job Von Rosenberg has done is pretty impressive given the context.

Commerce's top player is guard Demarcus Demonia, who leads the team in points, rebounds, and steals. At 6'7, he has great length for a guard, and is a really good defensive player due in part to this physical advantage.

Here's the Lions' starting lineup.

What to watch for.

• Three-point defense.

A&M-Commerce is one of the worst three-point shooting teams in the country, ranked 355th out of 358 teams in percentage at 27.2%. Despite this, they're ninth in the country in three-point attempts per game at 29.4. They hit just eight per game out of all of these attempts, and fail to get many offensive boards, where they rank just 205th at 10.2 per game. On the flip side, Texas only allows 29.3% from three, good for 42nd in the country. This plays heavily into Texas' favor, as the Longhorns' defensive set's weakness is three-pointers off of skip passes to the weak side. If teams can't hit these outside shots, they frankly cannot hang with Texas.

• Free-throw discrepancy.

Texas has struggled to get to the line this season, ranking 195th in the country in FT attempts per game at 17.6. Contrarily, A&M-C gives up 21.8 FT attempts per, ranking them 341st in this category. Texas should try to draw more fouls in this game to prepare themselves for conference play, which starts on the 31st on the road against Oklahoma. In Big 12 play, the free-throw line is so important in manufacturing points against good defenses. We'll see if they can get some confidence going in this area with aggressive drives to the hoop to draw contact and hit some shots from the charity stripe.

• Turnovers vs. assists.

The Commerce Lions average 13.6 assists to 12.9 turnovers, basically meaning they have a 1:1 assist-to-turnover ratio. Texas forces 18.2 turnovers and gives up just 10.5 assists on made baskets defensively, which is part is due to their length and athleticism clogging up passing lanes and deflecting entry passes. They play denial defense on the catch and prevent bigs from getting good position inside. They also are good at shutting down backdoor cuts with the no- middle defensive set. For the Lions, this is a real matchup nightmare for them for several reasons, and the ability of Texas to switch ball screens and not lose a step is going to be key to their dominating this game.

• Best bet.
