Disappointing loss on Saturday. So many plays you can point to. Four penalties on first drive. Second drive, 16 plays, PI down the sideline. TD before half was critical, late hit on the QB. Had opportunities on offense, dropped fourth down pass, dropped TD pass. When playing on the road, can't have those types of plays.
Have a tough one this week against Baylor. They're at home. All about focus and preparation. Team will play hard, not concerned about that at all. Coaches have to have a plan in place.
Hill and D Davis ... haven't had the snaps yet with Boyd and Bonney playing well. Alternating a lot of guys. Sheroid played a lot on Saturday. Rotation is still there, they're just not getting many snaps.
Has a lot of respect for Bill Snyder, unbelievable coach. For him to tell Strong he's the guy, has tremendous respect for him. Strong knows his team can play a lot better, will play better, have to continue to develop the team and move forward.
On the personal fouls and jumping off sides ... quick snap count, their center did a really good job of snapping the ball. On the personal foul, told the official that they called that one, but didn't call one when Buechele got hit on fourth down, and another when a guy hit Buechele from the backside. Have to be smart about how they play in critical times of the game.
More on Hill and Davis ... it's all about your work in practice. That's where it starts. They were out there early, gave up some big plays. They're going to rotate in. They're looking for a combination that can get them off the field, not give up throws over their head, not give up pass interference. Hill and Davis will get their chances, will get to play some.
Doesn't know if sophomores are regressing, but other guys are pushing them. Those guys played a lot last year, but guys like Freeman and Tim Cole played well on Saturday. Duvernay, Dorian Leonard playing well. It's not that guys like Burt and other sophomores are regressing, but when other guys are making plays, you stick with those guys.
K-State made a lot of mistakes "tried to give us the game" but Texas didn't capitalize. Have to keep battling and it will eventually happen. Just have to take advantage of opportunities and they didn't last week.
Have to execute when they get turnovers and they haven't done that. Comes back to execution, have to take advantage of it.
Has a friendship with Jim Grobe from when Grobe was at Wake Forest. He's been amazing at Baylor. Has come in and got guys to play under him, and that's what they've done.
Duvernay has so much speed, can stretch the defense. Once he gets it, they're not going to go catch him. He does so much, teams know his speed on the outside so they're starting to see a lot of double teams. He's very quiet, love who he is, the type of person he is. He's as solid as you can ever be. Him and his brother are the same ... if they were sitting in a room, you wouldn't even know they were there.
You always want to be better and have better progress than what they've seen. They've been close in games that he's kind of worn that cliche out.
Five games left on the schedule. Three of the toughest opponents are at home. With them being at home, he expects them to play pretty well. No reason for them not to. They have a chance to end up with a good year if they take it week by week. Don't look down the road, take it game by game.
You have a lot of respect for Baylor, they've done a really good job of recruiting and success under Briles. They're system on offense has been good and have good athletes on defense. Amazing to see how that program has come on the past few years.
He does have support within the program, they just have to play better at the end of the day. Can't lose close games. Have to do a better job of coaching, players have to play better. On support from Fenves and Perrin: "They show that support. You have that support."
Baylor doing a good job of running the ball. You don't see as many passing yards as you've seen in the past, but their run game has been incredible. Whole defense is going to have to play well. Going to have to match scores, play well. That's the good thing about playing at home, will have the crowd with them, he expects the defense to play well.
After the turnovers, feels Gilbert is doing a really good job, now it's about converting and continuing to move the ball. The opportunities are there. He's aggressive, when he sees the turnovers, knows they have to go score and capitalize.
On the overall struggles ... when you go back and look at the game, you have to break it down. They had opportunities. It's more what they're doing to themselves than what other teams are doing. Have to make fourth-down catches. When you're placed in that position, you have to make the play.
All about challenging themselves. Are you playing at your best? Are we doing everything we possibly can to be in position to move forward? They've had issues on defense, still working through those. Same with offense and kicking game. Have to challenge themselves each and every week.
The WR rotation doesn't hurt the rhythm of Buechele. They spread the ball around so much. Guys are going to get their opportunities and their touches. That's what WRs want to hear. The ball is spread around, which makes it so DBs can't lock down on a guy because he's able to find the open guy.
Baylor hasn't done a lot of wildcat this year. QB Russell can run the football. This is a different team, have a QB who can throw the ball to the outside.
Players and coaches are always on the same page. Players have respect for the coaches because the coaches build that relationship with the players. D Davis and Hill aren't struggling because of their relationship with their coach. They just have to practice better and play better. Players have respect for their coaches because they're around each other so much. There's no flare-up where there's a big separation between player and coach.
Buechele is doing really well. He's played so many games, you kind of forget he's a freshman. The fourth down throw to Armanti was an unbelievable throw. He continues to get better, and he'll let you know he can continue to get better. But he's been terrific.
A lot of times, when you've been around an outstanding team, the leadership is within the older guys. They don't have a lot of older guys who are feature guys, like a QB or DE. What they've tried to do is take the juniors and seniors and combine that group since a lot of juniors have played. They're doing a really good job, there just aren't enough leaders.
A lot of times the crowd at home gets guys going and that's why they've played better at home. Going to have to match that this week against a good Baylor offense. Will give up some plays, but will have to bounce back and do their job.
Usually you have a team that has played a lot and played through those struggles, and you have a feature leader that you can go to. Texas hasn't had anybody that's really separated, so you're wondering who is going to be that guy. The leadership has to come through the coaches.
On recruiting ... they're always going to be able to recruit well and get the guys they get. They don't have many numbers so they'll have to be selective at positions. They'll be fine. He doesn't need early commitments because they're just reservations. Will put the hammer down in December and January, and they'll go get what they need to go get.
That's it for today.
