Finally able to get over the hump, get a road win. Lot of good individual efforts.
OL did a great job, D'Onta was fantastic. Defensively, played well in second quarter and got some key stops in the end.
Play he goes back to, when they fumbled the ball on the goal line. Duvernay standing on about the 5 yard line, takes off after him, runs him down, gets him out of bounds at the 2 yard line. That was a bit of a turning point. That could have been a swing they didn't recover from, but everyone got juiced watching Duvernay's effort. They could have collapsed and not recovered, but offense responded well. Told the team, that was probably the turning point because everybody on the sideline was looking at him. The effort was a shot in the arm for them.
Tough opponent coming in this week in WVU. Very balanced, playing well on defense. Don't turn the ball over when on offense. QB Howard good with the run and pass. Going to take a team effort, will have to play well in all three phases.
Good opponent coming in, back at home, team has won two in a row and now they're looking for the next one. Winning two has been a confidence builder, not taking anything for granted.
The guys are gaining confidence. Defensively they've played better. Ended games against Baylor and TT with defense on the field. D is getting more confident. So is offense and kicking game.
Malik Jefferson is a special player. When really good players are sat down, they take it personally. Malik sat down, watched tape, and it was obvious he wasn't playing well. He can take criticism. Last two weeks he has come on for them. On Saturday, told him he's looking like the guy he should be looking like. Played very well against TT. All the guys expect him to play well, that's what he's showing the last two weeks.
Defensively, they have really good coaches. It's not all Charlie. Vance Bedford and Jennings doing a good job with the secondary. Being a lot more aggressive. They're coming at the QB more on second and third downs. Can't let the QB sit back there with no pressure. Still have a long way to go, can improve a lot. Tackling still needs to improve, have to get off the field on third down.
Texas won last four against top-12 teams. The guys see it, they know where teams are ranked. Biggest thing is playing at home, going to be a good crowd. The players know where teams are ranked and how well they have to go play to win the football game.
On not using D'Onta late in the game ... they've been very successful in the 18-wheeler package. Lot of confidence in Gilbert, will continue to run it, will always have that package. They've had some success in it and will continue to be successful with it.
Wickline coming back to Austin ... Wickline is an outstanding coach. The lawsuit wasn't a big distraction for Strong, was more for Wickline. Is an outstanding coach, line is doing a great job playing for him at WVU.
On the third and fourth down without Foreman ... play was set up to get the first down. Tyrone can get the first down, has to drop his pads and run over people.
On defense, simplified some of the coverages. DBs are seeing routes develop in front of them, keeping things in front of them and are not giving up the home runs.
More on Foreman ... Foreman didn't know the #s he had until they said something to him after the game. The 18-wheeler package is a solid package for them. Sounds like he doesn't regret the decision to go with it late in the game.
Gilbert has built an offense where everything isn't put on Buechele. Run game has done well behind good OL play. Buechele throws a great deep ball. He's also really focused, locks in and nothing really bothers him. He has enough around him. It's an offense that has a lot of success because a lot of people are playing well.
The OL walks into a game wanting to be physical, wanting to run the football. Even if a guy goes down, others are coming in and playing well. OL is where it starts ... if you can't win up front you have no chance.
Collin Johnson made two unbelievable catches against TT. He and Buechele are best of friends. They've been waiting on that game from Johnson, was good to see it happen.
This is going to be a key game, need to build on the last two. Have to go out and have a good week of practice. WVU will come with a lot of pressure on defense, on offense they won't beat themselves.
Win Saturday makes them bowl eligible. Team and coaches haven't even said anything about it. They're just looking at the game, taking them one at a time. Would be big for the seniors since they didn't make a bowl last year.
Foreman is so physical at the point of attack, he protects his body, and his breakaway speed surprises people. If he's not the fastest on the team, he's up there, top three.
Texas has been in games like Baylor and TT where they didn't win them. Have to continue to work, not get complacent, not get full of themselves. There are going to be obstacles, have to overcome them.
Michael Dickson can flip the field. He's certainly a weapon for them, has done a great job. He just gets stronger. He doesn't even know how strong his leg is. Is a big-time weapon.
Kris Boyd is playing really good football. Like all guys, they need to grow up, mature. Once that happens, they start playing a lot and focusing, locking in. He'll make a mistake, give up a play but it doesn't bother him. He can forget the last play. Is playing really well for them.
In practice, you want to reward guys for their hard work. Don't ever want guys to get comfortable, but they don't have that because they have depth at most positions. If guys practice hard, he tells the coaches they deserve to play.
Always want to make sure you continue to grow, continue to go play. What's really helping Texas is who they're playing. Guys are locked in and know how important these games are. Was good to see how mentally focused the team was last week and ready to play the game.
WVU is so far away you don't hear much about them. But they're a really solid team. Three seniors on OL with a junior. 8 seniors on defense. Good QB and RB. They're overlooked until you start breaking them down on film.
John Bonney has all the physical tools you need. It was more mental for him. He studies the game hard, when he gets to the game he locks up ... has to just go play and let it happen. He's doing really well for them, he'll continue to get better. Has the size and speed. Can't be afraid to take chances.
Boyd played well. Holton Hill had a really good game for them. Had to play a lot of DBs.
That's it for today.
