Been a long time since December 5, last game against Baylor. Very competitive, lot of energy in the off season. Want to be very organized with fundamentals and technique this spring. Have to be better teachers this spring, then guys will be instinctive.

Offense, have to execute. Defense, attention to detail.

Have to b patient with the new offense, but every practice counts. Can't go out there and waste practices this spring. Have to make it happen.

Have had great meetings with the new staff, have to take it to the field. Offensive staff has been meeting a lot, feels once they've hit the field, they've had enough meeting time where they'll be able to get things accomplished.

They have a good mixture of old veteran coaches and young guys. Now it's all about becoming teachers.

The way they walk out there today at QB, they have five guys. There will be enough reps where they'll know fairly quickly who the guy will be. With the tempo they'll practice it, someone will step up.

They restructured practice. When they get out there today, they'll see how quickly they move. Have to get aligned on defense too. Things are going to move quickly, have to make sure it's organized and done the right way.

Guys are ready to get started, been so long since they've done anything. They're in shorts today, will be working on fundamentals. After the Spring Game, they'll be able to gauge where they are and what they have to work on in summer camp.

The young QBs have a chance because the offense is new, the slate is clean with everyone on the offense. QB battle will be wide open. Will be a matter of how quickly guys can pick it up and can do what Gilbert is asking them to do.

More than anything on defense, they have to get lined up. It will be a different attack for them. They have to get defensive calls in quickly. Wants to see them move around. When you practice fast, you're going to play fast. Have to get aligned, get the calls in, get things accomplished the right way.

Looking at the roster, some of the seniors (Bluiett, Boyette, Sheroid Evans) ... they have enough guys in the senior class who have played a lot of football. They have a good mixture of young guys and veterans. Wouldn't really say they're a young team because enough guys have played a lot of football.

The offense will come down to them teaching it right, and then guys executing it. Have to make sure guys are not going the wrong direction, guys have to be locked in. Have to demand execution each and every play.

Told the coaches to be patient, don't get down on a player. If a guy doesn't pick it up right away, don't get down on him right away. May have to slow it down some days, make sure they can get as much as they can out of practice. It still comes down to fundamentals and technique, doing the little things and attention to detail.

Guys who have put on weight. Omenihu is 265 right now, came in at 215. Other guys have maintained very well. Garrett Thomas now at 300-plus. More about where guys are comfortable playing with their weight.

Doesn't know which QB will take the first rep in 11 on 11 work. Swoopes will probably be the guy since he finished the year there. Sterlin will make the decision on a QB when he's comfortable and has seen the guys.

Shackelford is in the mix, will get a chance at center. Elijah Rodriguez and Cuney could get looks also. Brandon Hodges is talented but hasn't come on for them. He could figure into the OL depth as well. Other help is coming from the freshmen.

Have to upgrade the defensive front. Last year, people were able to run and throw with ease because they couldn't control the line of scrimmage.

Have to find playmakers at the wide receiver position.

Team will go as the QB position goes. They have numbers, now who is going to step up and be that guy?

Dalton Santos has a toe injury. Ty Templin banged up. Derick Roberson will be off and on this spring. Kirk Johnson also injured.

Swoops is a senior now, it's time for him to step up and do something. Jerrod Heard has a chance to step up after getting experience last year. It's all new for the QBs, guys have to step up and go compete. There's no choice.

Shorts the first two days. They'll have a wide open offense, but it still comes back to toughness. They'll have 1 on 1s, work on tackling, 3 on 3 drills.

Blake Whitely will be out this spring with injury.

Tackling is about technique and how you teach tackling. Some people get afraid of injuries, but it's all about how you teach it. It's a trend for a lot of people to go away from tackling in practices but it's about proper form.

Malik Jefferson has played a lot of football and a lot is expected of him this year.

Strong is ready to go. This is a critical year for them. There's a standard and they need to meet that standard. Feels like they have the guys in place. It's about moving it forward. Now they feel like the guys are their guys, they understand what the vision is and what they're trying to get accomplished.

This is the first spring where he's seen guys go out and compete in off-season team drills. Guys are very competitive. It's a whole attitude change. Sitting at home during bowl season bothered a lot of them.

Thinks the RB room is the best on the team with Foreman and Warren, and Kirk Johnson when healthy. Kyle Porter will be a good change of pace when he gets on campus.

Malik can play a lot of different positions for them and is very versatile. They move him around a lot, can win one on one on the outside. Building something at the linebacker position. At one point was a weak spot for them, but now they have so many options at the position and create match-ups they're looking for.

The seat has always been hot since he got to Texas. But they need to win. It's an unbelievable program with standards, hasn't happened in the first two years. Need to put a product on the field that everyone is happy with.

Doesn't know how fast they'll go ... they'll know today. He's going to give Sterlin everything he needs to be successful.

Chris Warren listed at 255 pounds. He's so big and wide. No fat there. He can carry it, but they'll see. He may shed some weight in the spring, but he has gotten so much stronger. This is really the first off-season he has gone through. Him and Foreman are both big, physical backs that can pound people.

Hopes we're not talking about QBs in the fall. Hopes at the end of spring they're really comfortable with one guy. They have two guys who played a lot last year, others pushing them, now they hope someone rises up and takes control.

And that's it for this PC.
