Credit the offensive staff for being patient in the run game. A lot of the throws they had were RPOs, where they had a run play with a screen attached to it. It was a big shot in the arm for the offensive line to be able to do what they did in the second half running the football.
He envies teams that go through the season with the same guys at OL. There’s no position in organized sport as interdependent as the OL. Communication, chemistry are all paramount along the OL. When you have new guys in there all the time, it makes it difficult. Not an excuse, you have to find a way to do it. But to say the OL has been affected by the lack of continuity has been accurate.
The rivalry with TCU is that Texas hasn’t performed well against them since they’ve joined the conference. They’re an in-state school, they take those games very seriously. They want to make sure they perform well against TCU and win more than they have since TCU joined the Big 12. Being on the wrong end of the scoreboard the last few years does add some motivation. Players know each other, guys are pretty motivated to make sure they get on the other side of the ledger.
Ehlinger was cleared to practice yesterday. Another day of evaluation and progress today. Barring any setback, he’ll be full speed ahead tomorrow.
Not ready to name a starter or say anything about who is going to start. Only silver lining in both Ehlinger and Buechele being injured, they can keep who is going to start under wraps as best as they can. They’ll have an idea on a starter Tuesday or Wednesday on who it will be starting, but there’s still a possibility you will see both of them as well.
On Buechele against Baylor … thinks he played really well. Was the team’s offensive player of the game. Managed the game well aside from the one underthrown interception. Protected the ball well. When the defense made him keep it in the run game, he was able to make yards doing that. Extremely accurate passer, thought he played really well, especially for a guy who has been on the shelf for as long as he has.
On Toneil Carter and Daniel Young … vision was really good for their first extended gametime action. And they both broke tackles, which was really good. Times when the line blocked for 3 or 4 yards and you break a tackle to make it 9 or 10. Still have issues to correct. Both were excited to play, some landmarks in the run game and tempo weren’t extremely buttoned up. But two things that stood out was very good vision and they both broke some tackles.
On Lil’Jordan Humphrey and Cade Brewer being on the field together … Humphrey is a guy who should play. Whenever he’s out there, he makes plays. Had a really good week of practice. QBs like throwing to him with his ball skills and catch radius. It was good to see both guys on the field because they could line up in a multitude of different formations but stay in the same personnel group.
