Thinks there’s a possibility Jerrod Heard will be used more in future weeks. A lot depends on the status of Buechele and Ehlinger.
Feels team is responding great to the adversity it’s facing. They understand who they’ve played, where they’re at in the development of the rebuilding project. They don’t like being close, don’t like almost, but feels the team truly understands and believes that being close and on the cusp is a lot better than being far away. The value of playing really hard of fanatical effort and physicality has taken hold of the program and the kids believe if they do that, they’ll have a chance in every game. Have to keep chipping away to get past the close and get over the hill.
On TCU’s defense … they somewhat dare you to throw it over their head early in the game and commit to the run. When they do read pass, they try to get their quarter safeties back into coverage. Very difficult to run the football, and TCU is so athletic up front that when you do decide to throw the football, they create disadvantageous matchups for offensive linemen.
Have to have really good players with experience against a defense like TCU. There’s no magical scheme against Patterson … he’s seen everything. You have to make sure the matchups are in your favor.
On Kansas … feels the biggest thing is Beatty has them playing really hard. They fly around on defense, front four on defense is really good player, LB is very productive in terms of tackles. They’re a bit like Texas, playing good defense, struggling a little to find an identity on offense. Admires how hard and how physical they play.
On last year’s KU game and using it as motivation … Texas was 16-21 the past three seasons, lots of games you could use as motivation. They’re trying to go 1-0 this week. They understand the clock is ticking on their opportunities in the regular season, doesn’t think they need any motivation other than trying to get a win in the 2017 season.
On college overtime formula … hasn’t given it a ton of thought. Does like that there is an overtime. It’s important that they end games with a winner. There’s fun in it, excitement in it. But there’s also the element of “is it really football?” Kind of like ending soccer games with penalty kicks. When you take field position out of the equation and special teams out of the equation except for FG and FG block, it kind of doesn’t feel like football but he understands why they do it the way they do. He sees both sides and is glad they do have an overtime.
On Denzel Okafor … Got dinged up against Baylor, missed some practice time last week, which is why he didn’t play much. The experience for him will be invaluable. Wishes he hadn’t played the 27 plays as a true freshman. Thinks a fifth year would really help him. God has blessed him with some tremendous physical abilities. Speed of the game is something he’s adjusting and getting better at, but the sky is the limit for him. Playing true freshmen and redshirt freshmen on OL isn’t good business if you have to do it too much. The best lines around the country have experienced veterans on their lines. It’s a big difference in terms of physical and mental development when you’re playing young guys. They’ll get their eventually, will get to a point where they’ll be able to redshirt and develop guys before having to play them. Denzel is developing weekly and Herman is proud of the direction he’s heading.
