Sincere gratitude to the student body for providing an unbelievable game-day atmosphere, as well as all the fans.
Was as loud of a stadium as he and others can remember. It impacted the game. Thanks to the students and the fans for their support. Hopefully it's the same this week.
Good win. Played really well in all three phases, especially in the second half. Defense shut them out after giving up two TDs, was really big. Fourth down stop on fourth and 1 was big. Chose to make it fourth and 1 instead of 3rd and 6 on penalty, and players didn't disappoint them.
That being said, they've moved on. Saturday feels like ages ago. Extremely talented and good football team coming in on Saturday. Conference opener. TCU has had UT's number, if they want to achieve what they want to achieve long-term have to put last week behind them, learn from their mistakes, build on the positives and move on.
Injury updates .. Brennan Eagles doubtful due to hamstring issue. K Ingram had a good day running yesterday, probably questionable. Shackelford probably doubtful if they had to play today. DeMarvion Overshown coming along but still a week or two away. Malcolm Roach foot fracture, will be out 6-8 weeks with surgery scheduled on Wednesday.
-----
Will have to make up for Roach's production and also his leadership. That one hurts, but that's what they train for. He's sure the guys behind Roach will be ready.
-----
Have their work cut out for them on both sides of the football this week. TCU has speed everywhere. Skill guys on offense are really fast. On defense, even their front, is fast and athletic. They played well, came up a big short against Ohio State, but that's as fast of a defense as he's seen in a long time.
-----
Fourth down stop provided a ton of energy. It wasn't your normal fourth and 1. Could have backed them to third and 6, stopped them, and then USC probably gets a field goal. By declining the penalty, there was a lot of trust placed in Orlando, his staff and the players to say "let us have a crack with this." Went with it and provided a tremendous amount of energy.
Jeff McCulloch ... as smart of a guy that they have on the team. He's coming into his own from a physical standpoint, has really embraced the physicality that's needed at that position. Will be in the right place at the right time because of how smart he is.
-----
Knows Gary Patterson about as well as most of the coaches in the Big 12, maybe a tad more. Patterson's defenses do a really good job of mixing zone with man, mixing fronts, mixing blitzes in. He's going to scout thoroughly, is going to know if the back is shaded 6 centimeters to the left, you're 95% likely to get this run. Have to be aware, but can't overthink it either if something is working. Tremendous coach, Herman has a ton of respect for him.
-----
On getting the team to forget the USC game after 24 hours ... in meetings yesterday, it was discussed that the only people whose opinions should matter on football matters where the people in those meeting rooms. Told the older guys to school the younger guys. It was the same message after Tulsa. You can be bombarded with messages that really have no impact on their preparation for TCU. Was a big point of emphasis yesterday, telling guys the opinions in the locker room are the only ones that matter.
On TCU ... because they're an in-state school, in conference, that they recruit against, this game has added importance. But biggest thing is going 1-0 in Big 12.
-----
On momentum .. chooses to use a different word, it's energy, it's validation. Lots of positives that come from a win like USC for the program, for the psychology of the players. Texas has been so close in their losses, to finally break through the close barrier and finally finish, gives them energy and validation that they way they do things can and will lead to success.
-----
Really thinks because of where they're at culturally and the leadership on the team, that moving past Maryland wasn't as difficult as many people think. Guys were ready to learn and move on, just like they're ready to learn and move on from a win.
Motivation of the previous four games against TCU is inconsequential. The guys on the team care about this week, that's all the motivation they need.
-----
Doesn't wish he got Buechele in. He's awesome, he'll be ready, won't be rusty if he's needed. He's fully engaged. The opportunity to get him in when you're running the clock out, after 70-something snaps with one QB having played, wasn't ideal. Only subbed out a couple WRs, had the entire starting OL down the stretch.
The freshmen QBs will be ready. They've both traveled. Casey Thompson runs the scout team, Cam Rising is the third guy. There would be no surprise by anybody who watches those guys and sees how talented they are if either of those guys were the starting QB at Texas at some point. When that is, he doesn't know. But they'll be ready. In a perfect world, they'd redshirt them both and still play them both in four games. But they've been nothing but a pleasant experience to work with. Really fun to see the future of the QB position in those two young guys.
-----
On why Texas can compete for the Big 12 title ... thinks their best is good enough to win, but they have to play their best. There are teams out there that can play a C+ game versus a lot of opponents and win. Texas isn't there yet. Now that they're in conference, they know what the schedule is like, they know who they can be and that was validated on Saturday night. Have to be that team every week and they feel like their best is good enough to compete with anybody.
On Sam's completion percentage ... didn't matter much. They prepared the team from Tuesday practice that it wouldn't be high because they were going to throw downfield against man to man coverage. Game played out pretty much the way they thought it would. Taking shots down the field isn't high percentage but when you do, opportunity for big plays is there.
-----
On the run defense ... great play from two inside LBs. Usually when you get great play from those guys, it means the three guys in front of them are playing really well. Did a good job of mixing blitzes and stunts, and players lit their hair on fire and just went, created havoc behind the line of scrimmage.
On recruiting ... they don't worry about things going really bad or really well in September. They'll worry about it in December. They're on pace with a lot of guys that they think they need to be.
Thanks to Derek Chang and his staff. Had official visits, 40-something guys with offers who are in on unofficial visits. There are some really positive things to having official visits on a game weekend, the atmosphere was incredible, got to see a win, got to experience Austin. But do they wish they had more personal quality time with them? Certainly. But all OVs were at Herman's house on Sunday, had individual meetings with all of them. Couldn't have been possible without Derek Chang and his staff and what they did in absence of the coaches who were busy trying to win a football game.
-----
Feels the team is much more mentally strong and able to come back than they ever have been. Not a finished product. It's confidence, not arrogance. It's confidence that they trained so hard and so well during the course of the week, if one or two bad things happen in the game, that's okay, that's football. They've trained so hard to be able to go on to the next play. They're in a lot better place with their training and the confidence each player has on how his teammates have played.
-----
There were some checkdowns by Ehlinger and a couple misreads, but they went into the game because of the multiplicity of coverages USC used, it was a lot more progression based. Thought for the most part he did a great job.
Dele Adeoye is doing great, is full speed in practice. Should get a lot of reps this week and be ready as back-up LB if they need him.
The thing that stands out about TCU is their speed. Have speed on all sides of the ball.
-----
Talked about it yesterday in team meetings, let's not let the sequence of the fourth down stop go by without analyzing it. Orlando walked up and said "We've got this, we'll stop them." Herman made sure the defense knew how that sequence went, in their team meeting, that Orlando said "put the ball on the 1 and let them go for it." Showed the team that they have a tremendous amount of belief in them. It's not some big epiphany, but is a step in the build of the program that they believe in them, they trust them and players can trust them.
-----
On Jerrod Heard ... gives everything he's got. Bleeds burnt orange and white, loves the university, loves his teammates and coaches. He'll do anything and everything if it helps his team win. He has talent, certainly. He's in maybe the deepest position room on the team, but he has taken his role, whatever that may be each and every week, he's taken it and run with it. Is happy to do whatever the team needs to help win.
-----
On intangibles of the young guys ... Rick Neuheisel says it on his radio show, that it's not the players that you don't get that get you beat, it's the ones you do get that you misevaluated. Texas spends an inordinate amount of time on the evaluation of the intangibles. They want to know work ethic, toughness, selflessness. The freshmen have not disappointed. They're all team players. They've all taken their roles without blinking an eye and they're excited about the 2019 class, they know that class will help them when their upperclassmen get to where they want to be. That freshman class has a lot of pride. The ones who are playing haven't flinched and have been ready.
-----
On Neuheisel saying he saw more athletes in TCU-Ohio State than Texas-USC ... doesn't know about more. Certainly TCU and OSU have a lot of athletes, but he saw a bunch in the Texas-USC game too.
On targeting ... doesn't know that it's gone too far, but has to be a way to measure intent. Yes, they want to keep guys safe, and if a kid makes contact illegally above the shoulder area, that should be a foul. But to eject a kid that's not trying to hurt anybody in the split second that decisions are trying to be made, doesn't agree with that. But anything that can make the game safer, he's all four, but needs to be a measure of intent when ejecting a player.
Likes their chances against TCU and they're speed. They can run too, especially on defense. Offensively, can't go side to side too much, have to run vertically. They have to keep them in front of them on defense, can't let them break free because it'll be hard to chase them down. Offensively, have to stick with vertical run game as much as you can.
That's it for today.
