Tom Herman will be starting up any minute with his weekly PC. I'll have live notes once it starts. Here are some comments from the coaches' teleconference earlier today ...
On what stood out about first Big 12 game … Offensive line played better than he had originally thought after watching video. The speed of the game was a huge factor for both teams, more for Texas for whatever reason. Tech a lot faster and more athletic than UTEP, Texas didn’t tackle them well all game.
On simulating that moving forward for the defense … You just practice. Go through tackling drills, add more into your body of practice. But in 2020, you’re not going to line up against your offense and run full scrimmages. You have to do it in drill work and have it carry over to game day.
On adjusting versus Gary Patterson’s defensive adjustments … Ton of respect for Patterson and his ability to adjust his defense. Lots of line movement and different fits for LBs depending on your tendencies. Have to use some tempo, not let them get calls in quickly. Have to use some window dressing too, some motion, misdirection, etc.
On the play when Bijan was flipped … It was a lesson learned the hard way for a true freshman about trying to hurdle guys. That was one of the more awkward falls that Herman has seen. Stomach was in his throat for a little bit, but Bijan bounced back and is moving around pretty well right now.
On how he measures explosive plays and if that number has changed from OSU to Houston to Texas … Any run over 10, any pass over 15. Yurcich brought that measurement in. Hasn’t changed a whole lot. Goal on offense is four runs and five passes. On defense, goal is under five total.
On TCU QB Max Duggan … Dual-threat guy. Heck of a player. Happy for him that he’s healthy again. The hits just keep coming when it comes to QB play in this league. He’s one of the better ones in the league, Texas will have their hands full with him.
On what he’s seeing from Keaontay Ingram … Thinks he adjusted well throughout the game. Tech’s nose guard is a really good player, took them a bit to figure out who he was going to fit on certain runs. Ingram had to be patient, cut behind him on certain runs. Ingram got more comfortable with the tempo as the game went on, really pleased with how he’s running the football.
