FROM ANWAR
--- Special assistant coach Gary Patterson continued his tradition of being the first coach on Steve Sarkisian’s staff to arrive at the practice field. Once again, Patterson arrived at 7:15 a.m. for the 8 a.m. practice on Tuesday. Most coaches start arriving by foot between 7:30 and 7:40 a.m. Even if Patterson has a limited role, his work ethic is evident every time I see him.
--- Texas freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers took first-team reps during a few drills on Tuesday. Typically, Hudson Card takes the first snap during every drill throughout our limited practice window. Card took the majority of first-team reps but the emergence of Ewers, even in limited reps, is notable.
--- Longhorn running back Roschon Johnson displayed his strength and balance as two defenders tried to strip the ball from him during practice. Johnson not only fought through the defenders, but he also used one hand to pop himself off the ground after losing his balance.
--- Speaking of running backs, Bijan Robinson has a spectacular diving catch during the portion of practice we were allowed to watch. Hudson Card’s short pass was a little off but Robinson showed his athleticism with that catch.
--- The connection between quarterbacks and receivers was off during the portion of practice we were allowed to watch. I saw multiple bad throws and dropped passes. Nothing too alarming, but it was noteworthy.
--- Isaac Pearson punted into the wind and the majority of his punts were very good. Pearson was a tad inconsistent during his initial attempts before finding a groove. The bad punts did not have much hang time and were 10 yards short of the punt returner. However, when Pearson nailed it, his hang time was perfect.
--- Texas freshman quarterback Maalik Murphy looks the part. Murphy is still recovering from a foot injury he sustained last year. However, Murphy’s arm is incredibly strong and accurate. Murphy is seemingly becoming more comfortable and operating with confidence. When Murphy is 100 percent healthy, he should be a viable backup quarterback this season.
--- Texas offensive line coach Kyle Flood praised Hayden Conner during practice for his ability to get off of blocks during practice.

- It would have only taken one injury on the offensive line to really shake up the two-deep, but at Tuesday's full-padded practice, there were actually two contributor-level linemen missing action: Most importantly was LT Andrej Karic. Karic could take part in team stretch, but left with the trainers when the team went to positional walk-throughs. The other player missing time was second-team right tackle and walk-on Michael Balis. Yes, as hard as it is to believe, the Texas OL is so thin this spring that a walk-on missing practice actually disrupts the two-deep.
- With Karic out, Hayden Conner moved to left tackle while his usual RG spot was backfilled by usual second-RG and true freshman early enrollee Cole Hutson. This makes the starting OL group in Karic's absence LT Hayden Conner, LG Junior Angilau, C Jake Majors, RG Cole Hutson, RT Christian Jones.
- I think we can confidently now say that Christian Jones won't be moving back to left tackle. That's a scenario that has been avoided by the staff all spring except for during one practice, the first Thursday of spring ball. Karic is going to have to defend that spot like his life depends on it once the freshmen OL arrive.
- DL Alfred Collins looks good in drills and should be the primary defensive tackle option in 2022. He's going to be better next year than he was last because he looks stronger and more explosive, plus he's using his length and leverage to his advantage in close quarters in ways we just didn't see last year.
- We got a little bit of a closer vantage point to the running backs than usual today and two random things that stuck out to me: 1) Jaydon Blue actually looks pretty small compared to any running back on the Texas roster not named Keilan Robinson (I guess that is to be expected when your top two backs are 220-pounders) and 2) Jaden Hullaby probably won't find much playing time right off the bat, but he's a tough inside runner. He plays running back exactly like you would expect an ex-LB to play the position. Roschon Johnson is a big guy who is likely to be used in goal line and short yardage situations next year, but if Hullaby sticks at RB, it would be easy to see him in this sort of role moving forward farther into the future. He also has much better-than-expected ball skills and pass-catching ability.
- When watching the RBs and QBs working together, it was impossible not to notice the guys getting a lot of work out of two RB sets. The QBs worked out myriad situations involving different hand-offs, flips, shovel passes, misdirection stuff and mesh-points with two RBs criss-crossing in the backfield.
- Anwar talked up Isaac Pearson, but he needs to be more consistent. Some of his punts into the wind were miserable. Yes, it was windy, but some games will be windy, too, and Texas can't have little dribblers like that when real bullets are flying. The kicking game will be an adventure next year post-Dicker. We'll just have to see what happens.
