For all the hemming and hawing about our offensive line being a hinderance for the upcoming season, I thought it would be interesting to compare some of Texas' key OL related stats from last year to those of Alabama. Stats don't necessarily tell us everything, but they are the only measurable way of assessing overall success of a team in certain facets of the game.

Based on the numbers, Alabama's offensive line was one of the worst in the country in 2021 and according to the stats, their line performed much worse than Texas' OL did. Yet they played in the national championship game and their quarterback went to NYC to pick up the Heisman.

What was the difference, you might ask. Alabama had one of the best defenses in college football. Texas had one of its worst defenses ever. I think we need to be a lot more concerned about where this defense is headed than what the offensive line will do in 2022.

2022 Stats From NCAA.COM

Texas

Yards per Run.......... 5.23 (26th)
Sacks Allowed......... 2.17 (61st)
TFL Allowed............. 5.33 (52th)
Penalties/game....... 5.75 (55th)

Alabama
Yards per Run.......... 4.11 (75th)
Sacks Allowed.......... 2.80 (106th)
TFL Allowed.............. 7.00 (115th)
Penalties/game........ 7.13 (106th)

*The Penaties number includes non-OL penalties but typically they are the largest contributor
