Floyd Welch was on board the USS Maryland when the attack came. The Maryland was moored next to the Oklahoma when the Oklahoma overturned. Welch, along with other sailors cut holes in the hull of the Oklahoma to save approximately 33 men. He continued to serve on the Maryland for the duration of the war.
