I should probably give up on the business of predicting the Longhorns after coming to the genius conclusion they would cover the 19 point spread last week against Maryland, but here goes nothing: Texas will come out and look better in Week 2 than it did in Week 1. Sam Ehlinger will bring a new spark and the offensive players will rally around him. The defense will be dumbed down and look more vanilla, allowing good players to play with less hesitation.

Nothing in this program right now comes easy, so you'll forgive me if I don't give the team the benefit of the doubt this week by predicting them to cover the spread. Frankly, I expect the defense to come out this week and bounce back against a team with half the talent level of Maryland. It's the offensive side of the ball that I'm not sure about. When the unit gets inside the 20, can it finish the deal this week with a likely true freshman quarterback leading the charge? Baby steps for 60 minutes, I suppose.

San Jose State isn't any good, but Maryland isn't that much better. Following last week's stunner, I expect the Longhorns to come out with more effort, physicality, and toughness. Confidence? That remains to be seen.
Throw out the scheme or the matchups. This game is about whether or not Texas is going to respond positively or negatively following what has become all too familiar for Texas players - another loss. If Texas isn't the more confident, physical, and tougher team, Tom Herman and his staff have some serious issues. I expect we'll see Texas show that against a team it will have much more talent than, and will actually be able to run the football with adjustments made.

Let's try this again.
I am not going to give up on Tom Herman after one game. Clearly, his debut was not something anybody anticipated. Maryland is a team Texas should have beaten. San Jose State is a team that should get blown out of the water on Saturday. However, I am not sure Texas will embarrass this team the way it should.
Texas played poorly on offense, defense and special teams. That is a lot to fix in a week. Plus, there is a good chance Sam Ehlinger will make his first start on Saturday. Ehlinger might hit the ground running, or he could play like a true freshman.
Regardless, Texas needs to play well in this game. If not, it could get ugly against USC and Iowa State in back-to-back weeks.

If I’m being honest, I don’t have a damn clue what to expect in this game. After last week’s performance, I’m just not sure what to make of this team. Last week, I went against my gut, which was telling me it would be a close game, and instead went with my match-ups (oops!). This week, I’ll just go with my gut. Texas was embarrassed last week and wants to take it out on somebody. The defense responds, the running game excels and Texas wins easily.
