I’ve been fascinated by these products for the past couple years and the potential they have for addressing a lot of problems in the US with obesity and the myriad of health problems that accompany it. I listen to a lot of business podcasts that have speculated that it could reshape our economy with benefits that also include effects on addiction to alcohol and hyper processed foods that plague our grocery stores and restaurants.

So when a friend of mine that’s a nurse said she and her colleagues have been using a Canadian version for months I was intrigued and asked her to how she liked it and if she would get some for me. She’s a crossfitter and wanted some help with cutting down on drinking and belly fat. She’d already put several of her obese friends on it to great success. One lost 60 pounds and another 40. The former was on blood pressure and cholesterol medications which she no longer has a need.

For some context we’re all 46 years old. I’m 6ft and was around 182 at the time and I exercise daily but my diet and drinking was something I wanted to let’s say optimize a little more. When my wife’s company announced an offsite trip to Cabo I figured let’s give it a try.

I started mid December with a very low dose and felt some effects but wasn’t really seeing much result. Dropped like 2-3 lbs but I was looking to get to 170-175 and drop some belly fat. I kicked up the dose 2 weeks ago and it really started to work. I got down to 173 pretty easily without any real negative side effects save for some gnarly heart burn if I ate too much, too late in the day. I kicked up the strength workouts and decreased walking/biking to keep muscle from being burned as well and am extremely happy with how I look and how quickly it worked once I got the right dose. Some notes and I’d love to hear others experience with GLP1 drugs.

  • These drugs come from studying gila lizard saliva that has something in it that regulates blood sugar and makes them feel full from very little food eating as little as once a month
  • It was originally a diabetes medication that showed great gains in the weight loss arena
  • You inject yourself once a week. It’s very easy.
  • I think in the US it’s around $500 per month copay. The place she found it’s $100 for 4-6 weeks amount
  • With me it just sent clear signs to my brain that I was full for hours at a time. Nothing weird just a pleasant feeling of fullness. Some small burping but nothing bad.
  • I basically just started cutting out dinner. I eat a smoothie for breakfast, about a cup of trail mix with fruit and nuts around noon and then a light dinner or more often a bowl of cereal or pb&j at like 4-5pm and that is plenty. Around 1400-1500 calories on weekdays.
  • Like I mentioned the heart burn can be bad in the middle of the night if I have a bigger dinner and too many beers but you learn the amount you can handle very quickly. Even medication didn’t stop the heart burn at all. I would just have to sit up and read for an hour and go back to sleep.
  • It will burn muscle and your skin will slack as was evidenced by her friends that just refuse to exercise.
  • I kept exercising and the weight came off quick but muscle is still there.
  • It’s just a great little helper to keep you from snacking and eating bad food. My friend said nothing looked appetizing to her at times but I haven’t really experienced that I saw the results and it was motivating to stick to healthy food.
  • For weekends now that football is over I have an easier time not drinking as much and if we’re going out to dinner we go early and I’ll skip lunch and can still have a few drinks as long as I don’t overeat.
That’s pretty much it. When these things go main stream and become more affordable I can see them really doing some damage to the snack food and alcohol industries. I was really pleasantly surprised at the effects. My wife refused, calling it cheating and hasn’t really dropped any weight for the trip.
