That changed after the civil rights legislation in the mid 1960s when the parties switched and Nixon installed his racist southern strategy to get the racist southern white vote that the Republicans have been using for the past half century. That "Sourhern Strategy" is made up bullshit by a party realizing they're racist ways had caught up with them, and they needed to fool black people with something to get them back on their side.
