The final day of the 2011 season was a final day we'll never see again. It was a different time. There was only 1 wild card team per league, not 3. The Astros were an awful NL team as opposed to a dominant AL team like today. The Baltimore Orioles sucked, unlike today. The Rangers were good then (and appear good again this year after many awful years). Anyhow for the TLDR crowd:

-the Yankees blew a 7-0 lead over Tampa Bay after 7 innings and lost in extras. That allowed TB to get in the playoffs
-Boston was one out from beating Baltimore until Baltimore got back to back doubles to tie it. Boston lost in extra innings and missed out on the wild card
-St. Louis beat Houston and would earn the NL wild card with that win
-Atlanta blew it to NL East winner Philadelphia and lost in extras, thus allowing STL to get in

What happened to St. Louis that year? Surely they didn't win the World Series, did they? Anyhow, I found this video to highlight that crazy 2011 night which technically went into the next day if you were on eastern time.
