I finally had a chance to watch most of the UTSA game that I recorded. Is anybody else at a complete loss on the targeting call as I am. If this stands, that means our LBs can't tackle a QB standing up vertically. I mean his face mask hit Harris's face mask, but I thought that was legal unless, the crown of the helmet was involved.

That's not targeting or shouldn't be.

It's not something that should be called from the booth either. The refs call the penalty on the field or it is not a foul. Targeting needs to be revisited again in the off-season.

It was one of the worst calls I have ever seen. He did exactly what he was supposed to. He kept his head up and didn’t launch at Harris. Harris initiated the contact by lowering his head. Hopefully they overturn it and he isn't out the first half in the Tech game.

Bad call in my opinion, even worse call after review.

From what I understand, the crown extends 6" from....the crown. Basically to the top of the opening. I also think calling him a defenseless player is BS as well because he was not in the act of throwing and it was obviously face to face. Complete bullshit call on a great sack.

If a QB can't be tackled the same as anyone else controlling the football then QBs should not be allowed to scramble beyond the line of scrimmage, period.

Bad Call. OU got a targeting against Neb but our guy lowered his head and put his crown in the guys chest.

100% spot on. I mean, Overshown was completely vertical. What else can he do? Jump high enough so that the QB helmet can have a soft landing in his gut? The official that reviewed the targeting in the booth should be fired for incompetence.

Cfb has gone the way of the NFL and Macdonald's. Monopolies

They need to eliminate the “first half of next week” part of the penalty. Then you aren’t in this situation

Did they rule Overshown came in HIGH?
I think it was more of the fact that they said the QB was a defenseless player. At least that's what I have read and heard. It really makes no sense though because the QB was in the pocket trying to throw the ball.

I believe the question was in reference to his recent law issue.

Well I just read his appeal for denied. So he’s out the first half on Saturday. That’s a big loss because we are paper thin at LB.

So they had to appeal to the Big 12? I could of told you that this wasn't going to get overturned on Saturday night.

They're going to fvck us every way they possibly can until we leave.

Exactly. Big 12 refs made up a call to save Bama from a safety, and now this bullshit. No way in hell that was targeting. It’s gonna be a long couple years dealing with Big 12 corruption.

The next sack Overshown gets, he should just hug the QB, take his head to his chest, pat him on the head, and gently lay him down at the ref’s feet.

What would that tackle have looked like in 2005? 1996? 1983? 1977? 1972? 1969? 1963?
TRAVESTY! But players are not spearing/smearing as in the "old days" - the rules have worked but the bs needs to be removed from these rulings!

And not just that, the fact that he had his eyes down the field makes the QB defenseless? That's like the quarterback's whole shtick, right?

And this is what it has come to--

As a former defensive player, I do the quick calculation and come up with-- if I've got a kill shot on the QB-- a shot like Overshown had, I'm crowning the QB--
Why?
I'm gone either way. Might as well put the QB on the bench with a concussion. I'm pretty much winning the game for my team unless they've got a Steve Young backing up a Joe Montana.
So I'm either going to ding dong the QB up high or I'm catching him in the knees on his plant/throw and handing his MCL to the orthoped.

"But Clob, that's some cheap ass sh!t football."

I guess so. But when you take away a man's options, oftentimes he makes someone pay for it.

This will be the norm. I guess we could practice the Dallas Turner tackle, the launch and drive. We'd get a targeting for that as well. It's missile shot time.

Absolutely. I'm surprised that we don't see more of this happening today. As a coach, why not put in an expendable second or third string defensive player, rip the QB's head off and knock him out of the game? So what if that player gets ejected.

So you guys are now actually talking about assault with intent? Surely you jest.
