Larry Scott defends Pac-12 After Dark, says late-night college football games 'unlock significant value'

http://www.oregonlive.com/pac-12/in...missioner_larry_scott_says_night_games_u.html

CORVALLIS — Larry Scott is aware that many Pac-12 football fans aren't happy with the conference's growing number of night games.

Despite the complaints, Scott believes in the benefits of Pac-12 After Dark.

"It's clear that for certain fans, that's a real irritation and it's a concern for our athletic departments because we do get a significant amount of negative feedback about the start times," Scott said Saturday prior to Oregon State's matchup with Arizona. The 53-year-old Scott has been the conference's commissioner since 2009.

A season ago, Scott said 24 of the Pac-12's 80 conference games had local start times of 7 p.m. or later. He did not give an estimated figure for 2018.

"The reason we play almost a third of our games at night is that was a way to unlock significant value from television in our last negations," Scott said. "ESPN and Fox placed a high value on us giving them a little more flexibility and being willing to play more night games."

The Pac-12 is the only Power 5 conference with schools in the Pacific time zone. Late starts are a way to avoid competition for eyeballs with the SEC, ACC, Big Ten and Big 12.

"We essentially extend their day," Scott said. "We give them a whole other window of high-quality, highly rated games. ... Playing more night games than we did in the past unlocked the kind of value our schools were looking for."

The Pac-12's deal with ESPN and Fox expires after the 2024 season.

"It's a complete open slate after that," Scott said.

NETWORK GROWTH STALLS

Scott said the Pac-12 Network is "very healthy" and will broadcast 850 live events this year.

"But it's not growing at this stage," Scott acknowledged. "We've had this stalemate with DirecTV and there's cord-cutting going on, so it's hard for any network to really be growing these days."

Scott still believes the network is a success, pointing to the increased exposure for all sports.

"We're creating a lot of value for the members," he said. "I would describe it as stable, valuable but probably not growing at the moment."

WASHINGTON VS. ESPN

Scott wasn't happy with ESPN play-by-play announcer Mark Jones' recent Twitter dig at Washington's non-conference scheduling.

ESPN announced that Jones will not call a Washington game this season.

"I was very disappointed that we had tension," Scott said. "And we, behind the scenes mostly, made a significant effort to try and bring parties together and quiet the situation. ... I think we've really improved the relationship between Washington and ESPN over the last year."

LEGAL GAMBLING

Scott said the Pac-12 is continuing to monitor the U.S. Supreme Court decision that opened the door for legal sports gambling.

"We are mostly concerned about the integrity of the competition and influences or temptations around student athletes, coaches," Scott said. "We're at a minimum going to have to put significant effort and resources into education and monitoring.

"I think there's still a lot of water to go under the bridge in terms of whether there might be some federal legislation and rules around it, or whether it will be truly state by state."

INJURY REPORTS

A conference-wide injury report is not coming anytime soon, Scott said.

"There was a strong belief by our schools that it should be a school by school decision," Scott said. "Some of the concerns on our campuses were that student athletes are different from professional athletes. ... There's a real caution about disclosing medical information about students."

Why do the fans have a problem with 7 pm local kick times?
The number one complaint is that it's too late for families. Plus, most of those schools are in metropolitan areas and they have better things to do at night. Finally, they hate that the rest of the country doesn't get to see their games that late. Their players have to fight for extra attention in Heisman races and their teams don't get seen by voters.

I found his comments refreshingly transparent and candid.
Everything he said is true.
What did you not like ?

It wasn't these comments, he has made a lot of mistakes. Here are some comments by USC posters, they are actually the milder ones, many just had too many 4-letter words to post:

The Clown Conference (Pac-12) will now have a football title game with a team coming off a bye vs. a team playing two games in six days. Who else would do this?

Thank the King Clown Larry Scott, he’s a joke and not even a funny one

Larry Scott is a moron

So many scheduling "issues" with huge result ramifications this year. Totally unacceptable going forward. You suppose Larry is even paying attention or too busy counting his money?

Dip shit Larry Scott.

So true. Larry Scott needs to get his crap together.

Fire Larry Scott before he destroys the Pac12 completely

You (Larry Scott) gave the best team in your conference no byes in the regular season. You gave them a Friday game on short rest, on the road, against a good team that had a bye the previous week. You are the reason that the Pac12 is not in the CFB Playoff. And yet you stood on the podium with SC with a moronic smile on your face after the game today. You are a stupid piece of Sh!t.

Dude thought P12 had more juice than ESPN...F’n idiot. P12 TV revenue would be 2x what it is now if he had done the right thing with the net.

He (Larry Scott) singled handedly screwed the conference of a contender and cost the Presidents Millions in potential revenue

Larry Scott should sacrifice himself and admit it's his fault for piss poor leadership

Playing late night/early morning games is a Death wish for Texas kids. Talk about never getting scene by scouts and fans. Try selling Texas mom's and Dad's
that they can view their son on TV at 1-2:00 am each weekend. Never liked the Pac-12 always preferred the SEC from a pure football entertainment sense.

For me, I like being able to watch some late games especially if I’ve been at DKR for our game. I wouldn’t like it for the Horns to be slotted into those late starts but I enjoy a late Saturday night no brainer college football game

As a football fan, the more the merrier. Generally enjoy the late night games.
If the college football playoffs weren’t subjectively decided on, I think they’d agree with you. But they know that eyes have to be on your team and national pundits have to see your team and claim you’re one of the best to make the title game. Winning conference titles and games doesn’t actually matter anymore. (Bama, Ohio St, etc)

I know it ain't my conference and I'd feel different if it was Texas being thrust into those timeslots, but.

I LOVE Pac12AfterDark.

My favorite thing in the world is going to a Longhorn game, then grabbing a big greasy cheeseburger, plopping on my couch after a long day, and flipping on a Pac12 game that's in the second quarter or so. I typically won't go to bed until all the college football is done.

Wacky shit tends to happen in those games too.

I watch the shit out of those late night games on the west coast.

+1. Have I fallen asleep? Yep. But love watching a late night game between pac schools

Living in AZ, I hear about Scott all the time. He is as bad as Goodell. The fact that the Pac 12 network isnt on Directv is a joke. He has done nothing to help promote or push the conference. Their lack of daytime games is a big reason I heard Texas and Oklahoma didn’t join the conference. He’s proud that 850 events are on the Pac 12 channel that nobody gets, but honestly, how many people sit around and watch college track and field? The officiating in the Pac 12 is actually worse than the Big 12, and I am not making that up. The fact that he still has a job shows how out of touch the conference university presidents are.

They don’t extend anyone’s day. No one on the east coast wants to stay up until 3:00am to watch mediocre football. No one in the middle of the country wants to stay up to watch the same.

If we want to watch a bunch of average teams play, we can watch CUSA games in the afternoon and still go out on Saturday night.

Unlocking value is code for their match ups aren’t good enough for prime time viewing.

Once you recognize that your products are not very good and your brand is not very strong, it’s actually very smart strategy.

You can certainly hold a different opinion, but my point was he isn’t lying .

I still wish the best of the Big 12 and Pac 12 would form a new conference. There are some quality universities in each conference being dragged down by irrelevant schools. The geographic footprint would be huge and generate plenty of TV dollars. By having west and east divisions, travel concerns can be managed as well as start times.

Who accused him of lying?
The guy is responding to.....
My comment was that he was being truthful and not using a bunch of bs PC talk.
I found it rather refreshing in this day and age...whether one approves of the PAC ...or not.
That is all.

I enjoy watching their late night contests. The teams aren’t good enough to catch my attention otherwise, and I enjoy being able to watch college football until early in the morning. But would I want Texas participating in that shit show? Hell no

Which is fine...unless it’s your team stuck playing in that game.
I’ve never been in the PAC 12 camp. In fact, that would be my last choice of conference to join. However, since I can stay up late to watch those teams, I’d have no problem staying up late to watch my team.
