I don’t know how we prevailed yesterday but I am hoping there were some lessons learned on offense and special teams. The defense is playing at a championship level but the offense and special teams are no playing complimentary football. Sark pre-game study and script always seems to work pretty well then it seem like the brain shuts off till desperation sets in with a tie or losing score to overcome. The sweet spot is somewhere in between those points in the game.
I also don’t understand why the play calling is not built around the strengths of the team specifically Quinn? It is very clear he prefers sideline throws and 25 yards or less over the middle. You can watch his release point angle and predict if it will be on target (flatter is better). He throws a nice spiral but it seems the flatter the trajectory the better accuracy. With that in mind adjust the route trees to produce this type of throws? It is clear that this team has to pass first to run the ball successfully. Playcalling and formations need to address this issue. I love the speed receiver running all over the field but how does that help you at your goal line or in the red zone if they can’t get off press coverage? The QB run is an afterthought with Quinn so how do you create more of a physical run style when needed? Arch package is intriguing but has not been utilized well so he appears indecisive when out there now maybe this could be the silver bullet to overcome OH ST?
I know Sark mentioned the need for bigger/physical receivers which was addressed in this 2025 recruiting class but how could this be implemented next week? OH st defense appears to be on Georgia’s level which means press coverage or drop into zone and QB pressures with 4 down lineman. How do we consistently move the ball? Our defense will keep us in the game but probably can not hold them under 20 points without complimentary offense/special teams play. Offense needs more ball control focus with explosive plays when available.
How about more 2 tight ends or even two back sets? Our RBs are great receivers. Roll outs with Quinn etc.. Finding ways to consistently get 3-5 yards on offense will be one of the biggest keys to winning the next game for either team. OH ST feels they can do that whether they run or pass. I think PK will figure out how to bottle up the run but at the cost of man coverage on the best receiving group Texas has faced all season. Can we create consistent pressure on the QB and have great ball awareness in the secondary? They will throw it up and let their guy make a play.
Will Sark take the next step in making adjustments to what this team does best? Can he figure out a way to involve Arch in a meaningful way? Assuming both teams bring their A games it will be a few nuances either way that will determine the outcome. If either team shows up without their A games it could be very one sided. I think whoever wins the Texas/OHST game will win the NC. I hope that is Texas.
