Poona Ford

One of my favorite Longhorns. Dude was "too short" and would never make it. That guy was a wrecking ball and showed the kind of determination that few Longhorns have had over the last decade. So happy for him to do so well and yes he should be getting a pretty damn good pay day.

What kind of a name is Poona anyways??
His name is Kaylon Ford. His grand ma called him poo bear as a baby toddler like winne the Pooh and it stuck. Once he started school she'd call out poo bear when she picked him off and his class mates let him have it. He begged her to not call him that anymore and she changed it to Poona and that stuck.

Big Poon deserves to get paaaiiiid. One of my fav Horns for sure. How more teams couldn't see the value he brings to the table at a ridiculously riskless late round draft cost is just dumb.

Kid has been underestimated at every stop. He just puts in the work and straps it on. I’m a huge fan. Go get paid young man. You’ve more than earned it. Many times over. He’s everything right with football.

Him going undrafted was a shame. If he’d played on a better team, no way he gets over looked.
It’s a shame - he’ll finally get paid though

He was Big 12 Defensive player of the year.
Pretty sure it was his measurables that cost him.
Herman is gone so no need to continue to blame him for everything

It was his measurables and it never made sense. It shows the rote, robotic analysis that these teams employ when evaluating players. Usually short Dlinemen are passed over BECAUSE shorter height typically means short arms, but in the rare occasion that you have a short Dlinemen with ridiculously long arms then that should be a plus especially when it comes in a package like Poona Ford who has already demonstrated tremendous productivity. Aaron Donald is another example of how being a relatively short DLineman with freakishly long arms is a benefit. Geno Atkins is another. "Low man wins" is damn near the most fundamental football axiom there is.

Should have been obvious to anyone who really watched him play at Texas. He had so many doubters but his motor was always on leading to many big plays. One of the greatest indictments of Texas program at the time is that this dude wasn't drafted in the first 3 rounds.

Pretty sure he meant at Texas.

I'm not the best talent evaluator, but I do remember saying the team that gets Poona is getting a stud. Criminally underrated because of the obsession with "measurables." Some guys are just good football players. Rather have a slightly shorter DT with the motor of a damn flyweight boxer than some looks like Tarzan, Plays like Jane specimen who takes 8 plays off for every good play they m ake.
Who was that high 4 DE we had about 10-15 years ago who fits the bill of your Tarzan Jane reference?

I had an interesting experience. A young man was working for a plumbing contractor at my rent house, and he told me his name was Poona. I told him he was only the second person I'd ever heard of with that name, the other being Poona Ford who was a great UT football player.

He had no idea who I was talking about, not being a football fan. I asked him the origin of the name, and he said it was a Samoan name, that he was from Samoa and lots of people there had the name.

Turns out he and his parents had emigrated to the U.S. when he was 8 years old.

So, that's the story I got on the name.

That’s neat and all, but it was a movie reference. And the correct answer is Comanche Indian.

Love to see guys like P

He should be in for a big pay day. He’s by far my favorite Strong recruit.
Love to see guys like Poona who believe in themselves and refuse to accept some under qualified idiots assessment of themselves and go out and live their dreams... Great Kid and hope the next several years are even better for him...
