Now we wait:
Xavier guard Ryan Conwell has officially entered the transfer portal, putting the entire nation on notice, including the Longhorns. Conwell averaged 16.5 PPG, 2.7 RPG, and 2.5 APG under Sean Miller last season at Xavier. My first reaction? Texas had to be ecstatic when they saw his name in the portal. But as the day went on, it became clear that another school was emerging as a serious contender ... that school being Indiana.
Conwell entered the portal with a “Do Not Contact” tag, which typically indicates he already has a destination in mind. Given his ties to new Texas head coach Sean Miller, it might seem like a lock for the Longhorns at first glance. However, my gut tells me this race will be closer than people expect, and Indiana is poised to make a strong push. In fact, they might just end up securing a commitment from the Big East standout.
A Diamond in the rough?
Texas has now contacted its fourth player in this year’s transfer window, reaching out to Omaha forward Marquel Sutton. The Tulsa, Oklahoma native had an impressive season, earning both Summit League Player of the Year and 2025 Summit League Tournament MVP. He averaged 18.9 PPG, 7.9 RPG, and 1.2 APG this past season.
Sutton would be a great fit for Sean Miller’s system. At 6’9”, he has the versatility to guard both small forward and power forward while also rebounding at an efficient rate. It’s easy to see why Texas has reached out to him, but they aren’t the only program in pursuit.
Hmmm Interesting…
Four-star point guard Nyk Lewis has decommitted from Xavier and reopened his recruitment. Lewis originally committed to Sean Miller’s Musketeers on November 13, 2024, but with Miller now at Texas, the 6’2” guard has decided to reconsider his options. It’s still too early to determine if there’s mutual interest between Lewis and Texas, but given his commitment to Xavier under Miller, it’s a situation worth monitoring. That said, I still see him landing in the Big East, with Creighton, Seton Hall, and Georgetown among the schools involved in his initial recruitment, so don’t count out LSU and Michigan as potential contenders in this race.
What’s all the ‘Buzz’ about?
It looks like Texas won’t be the only school undergoing a coaching change this offseason. According to Jeff Goodman, Texas A&M head coach Buzz Williams is expected to pursue the Maryland job if it becomes available.
