@StrangerHorn Any thoughts on Neil Peart’s passing? Rush was one those groups I didn’t like at first, but ended up liking them more as time went on. I caught one their concerts when they were in Las Cruces and had a great time.

I enjoyed their sound. It took awhile but the country grew to enjoy their music. How old was Neil Peart?

From a shear musical standpoint, it’s Bonham and Peart by themselves.

Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, Danny Carey, Grohl, Copeland, etc.

Then you have the Jazz scene and all those great starting with Buddy Rich and Elvia Jones.
Is your avatar Tom berenger from the substitute?

Rush was my wifes fav band, I was into Moody Blues, Dire straits, Pink Floyd and Clapton

For me, Neil Peart was the gold standard for drummers. Everyone else get in line behind him.

Yeah, I'm going to have to disagree here. John Bonham was a much more technically gifted drummer than anyone that has ever banged the sticks. Bonham would make it sound like he had two bass drums lol. Lots of people had similar speed and power as Bonham, some even more, but nobody has his proficiency.

In the rock and roll scene, it's Bonham, Peart, Baker, and Moon.

IMO, that is your Drummer Mt. Rushmore...all due respect to Buddy Rich and Elvis Jones.

It's a matter of personal opinion and personal preference. You can't go wrong with any of those guys that you mentioned.

I like what I like. That's the best part about art---- it all comes down to perception.
Grohl is very good.. was revisiting the Sound City Project that he played on last night. Nice piece of work with guys like Paul McCartney and Trent Reznor playing on it. Peart was a gifted player and there are a lot of very talented drummers out there. Guys like Bill Bruford from King Crimson and Billy Cobham (Check out his collaborations with Tommy Bolin on Startus. I also really like the song Wild Dogs by Tommy (Tommy died young and when Billy was told that Tommy passed away he broke down and just cried). Another guy I like is Steve Gadd a really talented and diverse musician.

I have a friend that is a studio guy (considered one of the top 4 bass players in the world) and partners with Victor Wooten and he works a lot with Gregg Bissonette. Gregg was the drummer for David Lee Roth after the split with Van Halen a (and Gregg stays busy on studio sessions and was the drummer on the Bass Extremes project initiated by Steve Bailey and Victor Wooten) and the guitarist for them at that time was Steve Vai. Check out Zappa plays Zappa (that's Dweezil Zappa playing his dads stuff live and the drummer on that project is solid).

Another guy that I really enjoy watching and listening to is Stanton Moore of Galactic a New Orleans based Funk/ rock/ Blues group. Check out the search by Dream Theatre for a new drummer when Mike Portnoy left them which was presented on youtube (and check out The Liquid Tension Experiment with Mike on drums for Dream theatre on youtube Mike is remarkable)Then there are always the greats like Buddy Rich and Bonham who were just phenomenal..!!

Oh most definitely. That was the point I was trying to make. You can't pick one as "the best." But, it is widely and almost unanimously thought that the cleanest and most technical drummer ever is Bonham.

Peart was a more all around musician than the others
Moon had more raw power and talent than anyone
Baker was the most flexible and smartest (for lack of a better term) ever. He made his own kit for goodness sakes, lol.

I love them all. I love Zep, Cream and The Who. I like Rush, but they aren't a go to. I'd rather just listen to Peart play without lyrics honestly. The only thing with Peart for me, is that he seemed to "overplay." He added too much for me at times, but I think that is a testament to his genius.
