Texas football fans who have been waiting to hear the results of freshman receiver Bru McCoy’s appeal to the NCAA will have to wait a little longer.
As on Monday, McCoy has not filed his NCAA waiver, according to a source. I was told McCoy is expected to file his appeal at some point in May.
The NCAA has been pretty inconsistent in its waiver rulings this spring.
Former Georgia quarterback Justin Fields and former Ohio State quarterback Tate Martell were granted waivers and are immediately eligible to play this season. Fields is eligible to play for Ohio State, while Martell does not have to sit out at Miami.
However, former Georgia tight end Luke Ford’s waiver to play at Illinois this season was denied. Brock Hoffman transferred to Virginia Tech from Coastal Carolina to be near his mother who had a brain tumor removed recently and denied immediate eligibility by the NCAA.
Here is what Herman said about McCoy’s situation earlier this year:
“I think every situation is unique, you know,” he said. “I applaud Bru and his courageousness to say, hey, this is not where my heart is, and I'm going to do something to change that. But as far as timetable, I have no idea. I would assume before the season starts.
“Then, my role, very minimal. I mean, this is a student-athlete, their family, along with our compliance department kind of getting all of the ducks in a row as far as appeals process is concerned.”
I will keep you posted.
