Texas football coach Tom Herman briefly address the media after Thursday’s practice, and here are the highlights of his availability:

- Herman said his team had a good week of practice and it went really hard. He also said the players had a little extra pep in their step. Herman believes his players are physically ready for Oklahoma and they will focus on their mental preparation prior to kickoff.

- When asked about the health of Chris Nelson and Zach Shackelford, Herman said, “full speed ahead.” Of course, Herman would not say if Shackelford will play this weekend.

- Herman said kicker Joshua Rowland had a good week of practice. In addition, Herman said they had a kicking competition with Mitchell Becker, Chris Naggar and Rowland this week. Rowland will take the first field goal attempt against Oklahoma.

- Here is Herman on how he is approaching this game with his team: “We would be naive, and foolish maybe, if we tried to ignore that fact that this is a big game. We addressed that early in the week. This game is very important to a lot of people that have a vested interest in both universities, and really both states. It is going to be a big game. It’s a big game because it’s a team that’s 2-0 in conference play and a team that is 1-1 in conference play. As I’ve said earlier today, they don’t give you any extra points in the Big 12 standings for beating Oklahoma, and they don’t get any extra ones for beating Texas. Our main goal is to compete for and win the conference title in the months of November and December. This is the next step along that way. We want to make sure that we focus on us. We focus on preparing the way we prepared the last few weeks, maintaining that routine, and not deviating from that routine. But at the same time, yeah, it’s a big game. It’s a rivalry. It’s two teams that don’t like each other very much. Other than that, it doesn’t affect your preparation. It’s just maybe an acknowledgement or recognition of that fact.”

- Herman joked about not receiving donuts from Sam Ehlinger when asked about the quarterback rewarding his offensive line for not allowing any sacks against Kansas State. Overall, it was a gesture Herman enjoyed seeing.

- Herman said quarterback Shane Buechele is healthy and “went through practice.” Obviously, Herman will not give further details. However, Buechele is still wearing an ankle brace.

- Buechele expressed frustration about not being able to play because of his injury to Herman during a normal conversation, but is not showing it outwardly, according to the coach.

- Herman said it is hard to give four running backs meaningful reps in practice. Toneil Carter’s playing time will increase, and he could play an entire series, according to Herman. Daniel Young is currently fourth on the depth chart, but Herman seemed pleased with the running back’s progress.
