I spoke to a friend who is covering the SEC meetings in Destin, Florida, and he was kind enough to pass along some quotes from a few coaches about the conference possibly reversing its grad transfer rule. If the conference reverses the rule, former Notre Dame quarterback Malik Zaire will be able to attend Florida as a grad transfer. The vote is expected to occur on Friday.
Here are the thoughts from a few SEC coaches:
Kirby Smart, Georgia
“I think it’s nice to have a level playing field with the conferences we compete against. I’m in support of allowing graduate transfer penalties to be the same as other conferences and not singling us out and making it more difficult for a guy to come in.”
Will Muschamp, South Carolina
“We need to have the same rules as everybody else in college football. Our league has done an outstanding job of monitoring the transfer policy. The policies we have in place I think are fair. But it is a little unfair for us as a league to have different rules than the competition we have at other places.”
Jim McElwain, Florida
“If we have rules in the Southeastern Conference that are different than the other conferences that we’re competing against and playing against, I don’t know what we’re trying to prove there.”
