Some experienced quarterbacks develop a sixth sense for their surroundings, feeling what's coming at them, and either throw it away or twist out of the pocket to create a play via athleticism.
4 seconds. That's how much time you have to run through your progressions and 3 checkdowns. At that point you begin to either step up, twist out of the pocket, or as a last resort throw it away. You can't freeze in the pocket. Not rocket science.
Maybe it would help if the offensive linemen would yell 'look out' when they throw a shitty look-out block
