Chris Stapleton admitted in a “CBS This Morning” interview his view of the United States has changed during the nationwide Black Lives Matter protests.
The country singer and Kentucky native said in the interview, released Tuesday, he has been moved by the protests.
“I thought we were living in a different country, and that’s 100% real,” Stapleton said. “The country I thought we were living in is a myth. I think we all have a lot of work to do as individuals and as a society and if you don’t think that, I think you’re not looking.”
His comments come following the injuries and deaths of Black individuals Jacob Blake, George Floyd, Rayshard Brooks, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery. Protests have spread from Minnesota, where Floyd died while in police custody, across the nation and have included clashes between protesters and police and other unrest.
Stapleton, a five-time Grammy winner and 10-time Country Music Association winner, said “there’s a very broad awakening” occurring in the country.
“It’s time for me to listen and other folks to listen,” he said.
Asked if he supports Black Lives Matter, Stapleton responded, “Do I think Black lives matter? Absolutely. I don’t know how you can think they don’t.”
Last week, Stapleton released a new song, “Starting Over.” It’s the title track off his new album, which he said will be released Nov. 13.
