When did fireplaces become so common in Texas.

For context, From the 70's-80's, my family lived in a home built in the 60's. It did not have a fireplace. Most of the homes in the neighborhood were the same as were a lot of the others built in that era.

Then from the late 70's on, it seemed that all houses were built with a fireplace. What gives?

I understand the reasoning for this for homes built prior to electricity and stable utilities, but from that time on it seems that it is not a necessity here.

The search for a condo in West Campus has me asking this question as most that were built in 80's and 90's have a fireplace.

Realtors and architects enlighten me please.
