Response.
That’s the word to describe Texas’ 6-5 win over Kansas State on Friday night. It’s also the word that defines this team after a 4-8 start to the year. Texas responded in every way possible and straight up stole a conference win from the Wildcats.
I want to stray away from the usual format and point out all of the different ways that Texas responded in this win.
No. 1 - The offense
This game flipped in the blink of an eye in the bottom of the eighth. Kansas State starter Owen Boerema absolutely carved this Texas lineup for seven innings. The D3 transfer had 12 strikeouts in seven innings and allowed just one run, well, until Pete Hughes ran his lefty back out to the mound to face the top of the Horns’ lineup for the fourth time. After seven innings of punchouts and frustration, Texas responded in a huge way in the eighth. Single, double, double, double, triple, sac fly. Just like that the score went from 5-1 Kansas State to 6-5 Texas. With the pitcher-friendly weather at the Disch, it seemed like all hope was lost in game one. Then all of a sudden Zane Morehouse was in for the save. Even for this resilient group, that eighth inning was something else.
No. 2 - Lucas Gordon
Lucas Gordon threw a season-high 112 pitches in six innings of work on Friday. It truly was a tale of two outings for Lucas. Gordon issued six free passes and allowed two runs in the first two innings. After the second, Gordon’s response was phenomenal. In his final four innings, Gordon allowed just one Wildcat to reach base and ended the game with nine strikeouts. Kansas State wants to draw walks and play small ball and Gordon played right into the Wildcats’ hands. As bad as those first two innings were, credit to Gordon for getting it together and keeping Texas in the game. The Horns have five games in five days, a short start from Gordon would have really stung. True aces find ways to get the job done when they don’t have their best stuff. Gordon responded, battled, and got the job done in the opener.

No. 3 - Zane Morehouse
Oh the life of a closer. I’m absolutely certain that time was moving slower than ever for Zane Morehouse after his blown save in Stillwater. The time from the end of the game on Sunday to the start of this game on Friday likely felt like a month for the closer. Perhaps the most important intangible a closer can have is the ability to respond after a bad outing. Morehouse did that and locked down this win. After having all week to dwell on all the coulda woulda shouldas from OSU, Zane had almost no time to think about anything as he watched his offense rally back in the eighth, thrusting him into the game with a one-run lead in the ninth. Morehouse retired the first two batters of the inning before allowing a single and getting a groundout to end the game. After the win, Morehouse was grinning ear-to-ear on the field with an “I’m back” smirk on his face. Only time will tell if that is true, but it’s important that HE believes it is true and Friday’s save will help feed that needed belief.
This team has talent, this team has flaws, but perhaps most importantly this team has guts. Texas stole this win before the Wildcats even realized what had just happened to them.
Baseball is going to knock you down. It’s always about how a team responds.
