RECAP

They made it happen.

Texas completed the sweep of No. 6 West Virginia on Saturday with a 7-3 win to claim the Big 12 regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the Big 12 tournament. This was the 10th regular season Big 12 title in program history and one of the more improbable runs to a title. This team went through a lot in the regular season but never lost faith in each other according to Tanner Witt, “The strength of the team is the team itself… we had some struggles and had some adversity but we just clawed back and we answered every time.”

This team certainly had its struggles this season, but not this weekend. Texas looked and played like the better team for all 27 innings this weekend and took control of the game early on Saturday. Just as they did in the first two games, Jared Thomas, Peyton Powell, and Dylan Campbell began the game with base hits and got Texas on the board in the first. That trio went a combined 9-9 in the first inning this weekend and led the offense to a dominant weekend against a top-10 team. The Horns led 4-0 after one, 6-0 after three, and never let WVU get closer than three runs in the clincher.

Tanner Witt gave Texas three clutch innings on the mound before handing the ball over to a bullpen that used five different arms to secure the Big 12 title. In the end, it was Charlie Hurley that induced the 5-4-3 double play that sent the Longhorns storming out of the dugout to celebrate as the Big 12 champions.

BIG MOMENT

Texas had a 6-3 lead in the 7th inning after West Virginia scored two runs earlier in the frame. With one out and a man on first, David Pierce removed Travis Sthele in favor of Zane Morehouse. The future Big 12 player of the year, JJ Wetherholt, was coming to the plate and was due for a series-changing swing of that bat. And on the first pitch, Wetherholt changed the series, but not the way that he wanted to. Morehouse went up and in with a 95 MPH fastball and Wetherholt hit a grounder up the middle right to Jalin Flores who was shifted over. Flores made the play, tagged the bag, and delivered a strong throw to get the double play.

It felt like things were going to take a turn for the worse for the Horns. Wetherholt was due, the WVU offense was due, and we have seen Morehouse and the Texas bullpen struggle at times this year. But not this weekend, nothing was going wrong for Texas this weekend. Everything was coming up Longhorns throughout this three-day party at the Disch. JJ Wetherholt is one of the very best hitters in the country, but the Horns held him to a shockingly pedestrian 2-13 at the plate. Texas made pitches when it had to all weekend long, none bigger than the one-pitch dagger from Morehouse to Wetherholt to end the 7th.

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE TO NOTE

They say hitting is contagious and on Saturday it was freshman SS Jalin Flores that caught the RBI bug in a much-needed way. The freshman had two hits, one home run, three RBI, and three hard-hit balls in the regular season finale. College baseball hasn’t been kind to Flores in his freshman season, but he delivered one of his best games in the biggest game to date. Flores drove the ball to all three parts of the park on Saturday, a clear sign that a hitter is seeing the ball well and letting the game come to him. And that’s all Flores needs to do, let the game come to him. He has the talent and he has the swing, the trust in himself and the confidence just haven’t been there all year. Flores has received consistent playing time lately and that seems to be helping him at the plate.

Is this the beginning of a heroic postseason run from the prince that was promised? It’s likely way too soon to go there, but Flores can do damage and is starting to feel confident in the box which makes him dangerous and makes this lineup better.

TANNER WITT

“We’re not done yet and we’re gonna keep going” claimed RHP Tanner Witt after the huge win. Witt was exuberant and was grinning from ear to ear as he celebrated this moment and talked to the media. Witt delivered three great innings to open the game and establish the momentum. His teammates were behind him, the coaches were behind him, and the fans were behind Witt as he gave all that he could give Texas on Saturday. Witt threw a season-high 44 pitches in three scoreless innings of work. Saturday was the best that Witt has looked all year as he mixed his pitches and set the tone on the mound.

The ability to throw three different pitches for a strike is what makes Witt dangerous right now as he waits for his normal fastball velocity to return. In his final inning, Witt faced Landon Wallace with two outs and two runners on base. After falling behind 2-1 in the count, Witt went to the rare right-on-right changeup for a strike, non-surprisingly that pitch caught Wallace by surprise and brought the count to 2-2. Witt then went to his trademark 12-6 curveball to freeze Wallace and end the inning with a strikeout. Witt went crazy, the crowd went crazy, and the thought of the 2023 Longhorns making a deep run had never felt more real than it did in that moment. Slowly but surely, things came together for Witt just as they did for this team.

He was the perfect guy to have on the mound.

TAKEAWAYS

“It’s not the best team that wins, it’s the hottest team that wins at the end of the year and I think that’s the most important thing right now, we’re hot right now, the bats are hot, the pitching is good, the defense is great so we are going to keep riding it.” Tanner Witt said it perfectly.

Texas is not the best team. The lack of depth on the mound is well documented. But at this very moment, there are not many teams that feel more confident than Texas. This offense is good enough to get to Omaha. The starting rotation is deadly. And the bullpen has been better as of late. There is a long way to go, but this team has the feel and the look of a group that could make it happen.

This team has an edge. They have been playing angry baseball ever since the loss to San Jose State and it has helped them. Jared Thomas and Tanner Witt talked about feeling disrespected by West Virginia’s decision to save its ace for the third game. Garret Guillemette looked mad and surprised that Dylan Campbell was intentionally walked ahead of him to load the bases in the ninth. The team is just on edge in a really good way right now. They need to find a way to keep that edge because there is no more time for wake-up calls.

Jared Thomas, Peyton Powell, and Dylan Campbell went 9-9 in the first inning of this series. Let that sink in. There’s setting the tone and then there’s doing THAT. Campbell’s hit streak is at 33, Powell is hitting .369, and Thomas simply will not stop hitting. The top of the order is something else right now.

Travis Sthele has picked himself up off the matt and is a real factor down the stretch for the second year in a row. Kudos to him for not giving in.

The decision to go with Kobe Minchey to open the 9th said a lot. That’s a tough spot to drop in a freshman for his ninth appearance so the coaches must really like where he is at. It didn’t go well -- Minchey missed the zone with his only four pitches -- but it was telling that they went to him nonetheless.

Hell of a senior day for the seniors and all of the guys that might have just played their last game at the Disch.

Only time will tell when it comes to hosting. Texas has an RPI of 23 as I type this right now and that number will change plenty of times. David Pierce said that the Big 12 champ should always host but there’s a chance that he might be a little biased as the Big 12 champ on the hosting bubble. I do think Texas has a great shot at hosting. They are now on the bubble and I believe that the committee will give a team like Texas with a great brand and a great facility the benefit of the doubt. One or two wins in Arlington get the job done is my current belief, but we will have a more detailed breakdown coming soon.

Big 12 champs… after that OU series… college baseball is pretty great sometimes.
