Will the 2020 class be better than the 2019 class? Why/why not?

Man, that’s a tall order. I think it certainly has a chance, but if we’re playing the percentages, it’s going to be tough to beat what is currently the No. 3-ranked class in the nation. In theory, you’re asking me if the 2020 class is going to be one of the two best in college football … doable, but that’s going to be tough.

If Texas gets there, it’ll be because the Longhorns turn in a terrific 2020 season on the field that sees them play for (and probably win) a Big 12 title, and do a really good job securing in-state talent. Again, it’s possible but cracking the top two in the country is going to be tough.

Next 2020 commit?

Texas is in a good spot with several 2020 prospects so it’s hard to point to one specifically, but give me offensive lineman Jaylen Garth. The Port Neches-Groves standout did tell me after his visit a couple weeks ago that he wanted to take some time, but he also listed Texas as his top school so this one is definitely trending in the right direction.

What can you tell us about Preston Stone and his interest in Texas?

Quarterback Preston Stone is barely halfway through with his sophomore year at Perish Episcopal School in Dallas, so there’s a long way to go in this one but he’s a tremendous talent who is already holding close to 40 scholarship offers. His brother is currently at Virginia, so I’d expect UVA will draw consideration, but I would be shocked if Texas didn’t figure heavily into the mix. Tom Herman was by his school this week.

Have you heard anything about David Beaty joining the staff?

It’s been very quiet on that front in recent weeks. OB’s @Anwar Richardson reported a while back that Texas was expected to retain all of its assistant coaches and it does appear that will be the case, barring an unexpected change. If that holds true, Beaty could be a candidate in some sort of support staff role and while it does make a lot of sense on the surface, I haven’t heard anything new with him locking down a position. It’ll be a situation worth continuing to monitor moving forward, but it’s been quiet of late.

Did CTH decide to recruit out of state or did Jimbo force his hand?

I certainly wouldn’t say Jimbo Fisher being at A&M forced Texas’ hand to recruit out-of-state … the Longhorns could have had a solid class by recruiting only in-state players … but for Texas to recruit at a championship level, it was necessary for the coaches to pluck some top non-Texan talent. Some of that is due to the recruiting landscape in the state of Texas with schools like Oklahoma and A&M recruiting at a high level, some of that is due to relationships the Texas staff had (or built) with out-of-state players who had a genuine interest in UT. I would expect the Longhorns to focus a bit more on in-state guys in 2020, but there’s no need to completely abandon a philosophy that worked very well for Texas this year.

Does the NCAA approve Bru's waiver considering USC let him out of his LOI? If so, what kind of precedent does this set for coaches that lie to recruits?

I don’t have a definitive answer here, but my guess is that McCoy does get a waiver approval making him immediately eligible. As you said, USC let him out of his LOI, which should only help McCoy’s case. As for the precedent, it’s a fine line the NCAA has to walk. I’m certainly in favor of players being granted a waiver if a coach leaves (usually a head coach, in this case OC Kliff Kingsbury) but I do think the NCAA would be wise to lay out some rigid rules that take some of the subjectivity out of each case.

B/S Regional prejudice aside, across the board and all positions included, Georgia, Florida, and California are better recruiting grounds for college football than is Texas.

Sell. Things vary from year to year, so I definitely wouldn’t put those other states ahead of Texas in terms of being better recruiting grounds. I do think the state of Florida routinely produces more top-level talent – or has of late anyway – but that doesn’t mean Texas is behind all those other states, and it doesn’t mean you can’t win a championship by recruiting primarily from within the Lone Star State.

Will Texas ever catch up to Alabama with spending on total analyst nationwide? Alabama spent double what Texas does.

You have more information than I do because I haven’t seen each school’s recruiting budget, but that certainly doesn’t surprise me if Alabama is leading the country. Nick Saban’s support staff has always been insanely large and it seems like every time a solid coaching name becomes available, there’s rumor of Bama being interested in bringing that person on in a support role. Major Applewhite’s was reported this week to be interviewing, and I’ve heard rumor that Alabama is also looking at David Beaty.

Do you think Orlando will be here a longtime or get a head coaching gig maybe next year?

Impossible to say without knowing what coaching jobs will be available but with what he’s done in Austin, I would expect he’ll get several looks next year and beyond.

Last year’s recruiting, Bryan Carrington was all over the place. Was he more behind the scene this year, just didn't seem to be out there as much?

I wouldn’t say he was more behind the scenes other than the fact that last year he was able to go out on the road for a period of time. He’s still very heavily involved and still does a great job of relating to both players and parents. Carrington played a big part in opening a lot of doors for Texas and laying some groundwork, and he was instrumental with guys like Bru McCoy and Marcus Washington, among others.

I know Lakia Henry may be feeling the SEC schools now, my question is will the staff legitimately push to land him or be apprehensive dud to grades and the LBs we brought in?

Texas did sign a good group of linebackers, but the staff is definitely pushing for Henry. They wouldn’t bring him in on an official visit on the final weekend if they weren’t serious with their interest. Whether or not they can win him over this weekend remains to be seen, but we’ve seen this staff surge with prospects in a big way when they’ve had guys in for visits so it certainly wouldn’t be a shock to see Texas win out at the finish line here.

In general, do Jimbo and A&M have more momentum than us at the moment?

No. A&M does a good job recruiting, there’s no denying that. But Texas has more than held its own and will continue to do so. The 2020 battles should be fun to follow.

Kelee Ringo yes or no? And I don’t wanna hear any BS about it being too early. Call your shot.

Hmm, don’t hold me to this, but right now I’d lean slightly to no. I do like Texas’ chances quite a bit, but there’s going to be tough competition from programs like Washington, Alabama and Georgia so I’m not quite ready to predict him as part of UT’s class. That being said, I’d put Texas on equal footing with any and all of those schools right now.

Has our 2019 class drawn attention to Mehringer as an OC for another university?

Not that I’ve heard, but Mehringer does deserve a lot of credit for the job he’s done this year. His relationship with Bru McCoy and McCoy’s family was huge in getting McCoy to Austin.

How many 5-star recruits (if any), do you think we get for the 2020 recruiting class?

Tough call, but I’ll go with one or possibly two out of a grouping that includes Zachary Evans, Kelee Ringo, WR Johnny Wilson, RB Kendall Milton, OL Justin Rogers and DE Sav’Ell Smalls.
