You can place your name on a wait list for last minute cancellations. I was lucky to get a balcony room at El Tovar 2 years ago in the summer. I would only spend one night in the Canyon and be sure to not miss breakfast at El Tovar. Thanks, I am actually flying into phx and rented a motorcycle from their and wife and I are spending a week driving through sedona, zion, bryce and grand canyon. just need to button up some login at grand.
EDIT: El Tovar is booked until Dec 2020

Fly in May 18 and leave may 25 at like 12:15 am. I’m not really that interested in Grand Canyon. I’ll do the major points of interest in south rim and I’ll be happy. That’s a lot of miles on motorcycle in one week. When are you making the trip?
There is a campsite in the park on the South Rim where for a fee, you can pitch a tent. I am sure that you are aware that the temperature drops a lot during the night in that area. I wasn’t. When I went to sleep in the tent it was 70 degrees. Woke up at 3 am to 25 degreesI want to unzip my tent and wake up to the most beautiful sunrise I’ve ever seen. What campsite is best for this?
Yeah, I’ve got good cold weather camping gear. Really it’s the only way I like to camp. I don’t like sweating in a tent. There is a campsite in the park on the South Rim where for a fee, you can pitch a tent. I knew the elevation as I flew my Cessna 210 into the general aviation airport just outside the park but stupidly didn't give the temperature drop a thought. I learned the hard way. Most folks don’t know the south rim is at 7000 plus feet of elevation. The north rim is 8100 to 8600
If you like to hike, you could check on late cancellations at Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the canyon. South Kaibab and Bright Angel are the primary routes.
If you hike at all, nothing beats actually hiking in or through the canyon. I have hiked rim to rim twice, each time in one day. Actually, the first time (when I was 20 years younger) I ran the first 16 miles then walked up the last 8. It is 24 miles total, starting at about 8300 feet on the North Rim then hiking down to Phantom Ranch and the Colorado River, then up the Bright Angel Trail to the South Rim. We stopped for an hour at Phantom Ranch for lunch. When we started it was 39 degrees and it was 105 or so in the sun at the bottom of the canyon.
It is one of THE classic hikes in the world and well worth the effort.
Other lodges on the S. Rim are Bright Angel and Thunderbird. We stayed at the T-Bird....it was okay.
I'll second having dinner at the El Tovar.
Any recommendations on a great place to stay for two nights with kids around that area?
