Recs Needed -- Grand Canyon Hotels

Definitely stay inside the park. El Tovar is first choice but tough to get in. I also stayed in a cabin a hundred yards or so from the rim and it was great. IIRC, the park service runs a centralized booking service for all properties inside the park. Start there. Also, must have dinner at El Tovar

There are several in the park options. They are older and no frills. There are a lot of hotels right outside the park the town. You can also stay in flagstaff or better yet in Sedona.

Tovar is nice

Short walk away is Bright Angel Lodge, right where trail to go down in canyon starts

Stayed there a few times, older and basic, but right on the rim , and very affordable

Ask for a cabin w a Grand Canyon view, they may tell you you cant reserve ahead of time, but when you show up, little extra tip $$ works

Not sure you HAVE to stay in the park. We stayed in Tusayan which is just south of the park entrance when we went there 2015. Now, next time we go we might try to stay inside the park but Tusayan worked well for us.

Thanks, I am actually flying into phx and rented a motorcycle from their and wife and I are spending a week driving through sedona, zion, bryce and grand canyon. just need to button up some login at grand.

EDIT: El Tovar is booked until Dec 2020

You can place your name on a wait list for last minute cancellations. I was lucky to get a balcony room at El Tovar 2 years ago in the summer. I would only spend one night in the Canyon and be sure to not miss breakfast at El Tovar.

That’s a lot of miles on motorcycle in one week. When are you making the trip?

Fly in May 18 and leave may 25 at like 12:15 am. I’m not really that interested in Grand Canyon. I’ll do the major points of interest in south rim and I’ll be happy.

I want to unzip my tent and wake up to the most beautiful sunrise I’ve ever seen. What campsite is best for this?

There is a campsite in the park on the South Rim where for a fee, you can pitch a tent. I am sure that you are aware that the temperature drops a lot during the night in that area. I wasn’t. When I went to sleep in the tent it was 70 degrees. Woke up at 3 am to 25 degrees

Yeah, I’ve got good cold weather camping gear. Really it’s the only way I like to camp. I don’t like sweating in a tent.

Most folks don’t know the south rim is at 7000 plus feet of elevation. The north rim is 8100 to 8600

I knew the elevation as I flew my Cessna 210 into the general aviation airport just outside the park but stupidly didn't give the temperature drop a thought. I learned the hard way.

If you like to hike, you could check on late cancellations at Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the canyon. South Kaibab and Bright Angel are the primary routes.

Hiked both. Went down South Kaibab it’s steeper than Bright Angel but shorter distance to the river (7.5 miles vs 9.5 miles) with no water stations or shade

If you hike at all, nothing beats actually hiking in or through the canyon. I have hiked rim to rim twice, each time in one day. Actually, the first time (when I was 20 years younger) I ran the first 16 miles then walked up the last 8. It is 24 miles total, starting at about 8300 feet on the North Rim then hiking down to Phantom Ranch and the Colorado River, then up the Bright Angel Trail to the South Rim. We stopped for an hour at Phantom Ranch for lunch. When we started it was 39 degrees and it was 105 or so in the sun at the bottom of the canyon.
It is one of THE classic hikes in the world and well worth the effort.

Backpack rim to rim. Also been down Hermit trail and hike part of Tonto trail

Disappointed on choices years sgo clos or in park. Sedona is cool but far.

Other lodges on the S. Rim are Bright Angel and Thunderbird. We stayed at the T-Bird....it was okay.
I'll second having dinner at the El Tovar.

This is what we did and loved it - ate dinner at El Tovar and stayed at Thunderbird.

We stay in Flagstaff and go from there.

Not too bad of a drive and can easily drive to Sedona or the volcano or lost lake, etc. on other days.

I really like Flagstaff. Thinking about looking into a place that I could buy there to go a couple times a year and then VRBO the rest...

Anyone else live near there?

One of the cabins at the Bright Angel Lodge on the South Rim. Any of the cabins are ok. You don’t need to stay at the ones with the Canyon view

Spent a cold night in Flagstaff. More snow than I've ever seen!
