Sam news

He's in concussion protocol, could be one week could be more- all based on how long his symptoms last.

I wonder if he is locked in a dark room like they did with Ash.

With some Halloween tunes, maybe? That got the pirate fired.

We're going to see Heard starting this season at QB because of the injuries and I'm ok with that. A good coaching staff would have seen this coming and have him ready. No excuses at this point and I'm not talking the wildcat crap.

We've seen Heard at QB, it didn't work. Do people really not remember this. If they want to bring in Heard to run a few wildcat plays that's fine, but he isn't a full time QB.
Coaches can't predict the future. You really think the coaches and players have an unlimited amount of time to plan for every scenario that could ever happen. Practices are time limited. Wide receivers need to practice at being a wide receiver. Now that Sam is out I'm sure Heard is getting some work as the backup, but I'm sure he doesn't know the entire playbook or how to read the defenses etc... Heard's only chance to play well would be if the O line blocks well. Heard is a good athlete but he can't do it all by himself, just like our other QBs.

Umm.... well the question is can Sam or Shane read defenses? They hold the ball too long for that very reason. If Shane gets hurt, Herman's popularity will ride on Jerod Heard. If he's ready, TH is a great coach. If not, well you know the drill. Shane won't make it past TCU.

By that logic we've seen Sam and Shane at QB and it hasn't worked either. We've seen a RS Freshman Heard who spent his first offseason learning Watson's aborted spread offense only to then have to learn Jay Norvell's patchwork offense while still being coached by Shawn Watson. It's entirely possible that Heard could have improved his passing. Herman has already said he regrets not giving Heard more time at QB this offseason.

IMO, there are a whole lot of OC's out there that depend on mobile qb's to bail them out when their play calling and scheme's break down. This is why Shane and Sam are getting injured. Too many of these guys think they have to show how clever they are so that they can make the next step up. These guys (including Beck) need to keep it simple. We would be better off if we weren't so cute with our play calling. Heard could be successful if we weren't trying to trick defenses, but instead, going straight at them. Start grinding in the beginning with the run, mix in a simple slant or out to keep them honest and then run some play action later in the game. It's really not that hard. We have the personnel but our coaches have to show their brilliance.

We have no blocking.

My point is that none of our QBs will do well if the O line can't block. Converting a WR back to QB isn't going to make it better. It will make us even more one dimensional.

Jerod Heard won at least one state championship at QB. If SB gets hurt, you gonna wheel VY out of the stands to take over?

Simple blocking schemes. Run some counters/misdirection/reads etc... Running a 250lbs RB on a sweep is silly. I have seen some quality runs this year only to never see the play again. Better yet, take a page out of the last OC's book and spread the field by splitting out our WR's and then run Warren.

Heard is not going to be the savior at QB. Now that Sam is hurt they better start giving him reps because there are no other options but don't expect too much from him.

Didn't say he would be. The whole offense has been a disaster.

Actually, Sam has potential if we scheme to his strengths and stop running him into the Safety/Linebackers while giving the RB's 20-25 carries a game. I can't understand it. It's like the staff expects to average 7.5 yards per play when 4-5 yards a carry would open up the whole playbook.
